Crankie Storytelling with Artist Katherine Fahey
Join renowned Baltimore artist, puppeteer, and storyteller Katherine Fahey and her magical shadow puppet Crankies!

What is a Crankie?
Crankies are the original moving picture, a scroll of artwork in a box, which is cranked, so the viewer can see the artwork moving across the front of the box.

Come gather around with us for some home spun tales and tunes from far and wide, as far reaching as Baltimore and Louisiana to Northern Quebec. Joining Katherine will be puppeteer and foley artist Dan Van Allen.

A few of the many stories included in this show will be Sedna, the Inuit myth of the sea goddess Sedna, created in collaboration with 2 Inuit throat singers from Northern Quebec;  I know Moonrise, a shadow puppet Crankie based on an American folk tale/ghost story about a young boy has an encounter with a mysterious child ghost in the swamp near his home; and Francis Whitmores Wife, the true story of Vermont pioneer and midwife Elizabeth Whitmore.

Katherine Fahey, originally from Virginia, has worked as an illustrator, designer, and decorative painter. She attended The Maryland Institute, College of Art (MICA) graduating with a degree in sculpture. Her love of art, nature, and music have brought her to many places. Layering of the man-made and natural world continue to be a focus in her art. Katherine now lives in Baltimore, where she supports herself with a combination of design commissions, art exhibits, and teaching workshops.
