"Don't look back once you're on the trip. You already gave up everything. There is a hell behind you. Better die trying than giving up." Writer: Age 24, El Salvador

From journeys for educational advancement to harrowing escapes from danger, immigrant youths lives are greatly affected by the global systems and societal influences of migration.
How do they create a sense of belonging when theyre in a place that is clearly not welcoming them? Why are some immigrants accepted and others are not? And, how can they hold onto their human right to exist safely and securely without protection and respect?

In Otherwise, the stories of immigrant and refugee teens are projected from the shadows onto a theater stage, and into the hearts and minds of audiences. The youth writers of Spotlight Projects have written texts which focus on how it feels to exist in between worlds, when identity, belonging, and security feel out of reach. The stories offer us a glimpse into their history, and their now realities.

We are blending personal stories, court hearings, social media news, LGBTQ+ themes, and imaginative fairytales to offer an artistic reflection of how our society, government, and these particular youth are navigating these global migration issues. The stories will be brought to life by an international cast of theatremakers from the United States, Asia, Central America, and Europe. Not only will we offer a glimpse into the lives and experiences of these young people, but we will also engage in a dialogue with our audiences to further explore our collective experience.

"I rather have people being aggressive and mean, then begging on the streets. Its sad. Ive been hungry, Ive been cold. Theyre begging for money, for food, for attention, for love. They have a backstory. I have a backstory Im lucky that Im still sane and that I want to keep going."

The stories of Amjad, Euridice, Ivan, Joshua, Nahel, Oscar, and Sharaavi will be brought to the stage by an international cast of youth writers and professional theatremakers: Ivan Mendoza, José Montoya, Ely Orquiza, Diana Saaed, and award-winning Dutch director, Gable Roelofsen. Otherise is produced by Monica Back-Doherty and Fanneke Verhallen, in partnership with Studio 52nd Amsterdam.

10% of the tickets sales will be donated to Centro Legal de la Raza.
