Profs and Pints presents: A Crash Course on Economic Crashes, a look at what we learned (or didn't) after 2008 and 1929, with Trevor Jackson, professor of economic history at George Washington University.
Does the approach of autumn make you nervous about your financial situation? There's good reason for that. The two most spectacular economic disasters in modern history--the Great Depression and the Great Recession--were ushered in by autumns in which the bottom fell out of the stock market. And that's hardly all they had in common.
Ironically, several of the most prominent economic policymakers responding to the crisis that began in 2008 were experts on the history of the crisis that began in 1929. Why didnt their knowledge of the first disaster help prevent a second one?
Come hear Trevor Jackson, who previously gave a fascinating Profs and Pints talk on history's largest financial scandals, discuss how economic disasters happen and why it has proven so difficult to prevent them from occurring again. Focusing on the Great Depression and Great Recession, he'll talk about key similarities and differences between the two crises.
Among the questions he'll tackle: Are there limits to applying our knowledge of the past to present circumstances? Does our experience of the Great Recession change how we should think about the history of the 1930s? Does the Great Depression really provide lessons for today, or is each economic crisis unique?
