Eat Your Words 2019 with featured author Rochelle Riley
Eat Your Words is an extravaganza of food and stories in support of 826michigan. Hosted inside The Eastern, a fabulous event gallery in Eastern Market, this strolling dinner of small bites and big stories includes active food stations curated by some of Southeast Michigan's most innovative chefs. The evening will feature national and homegrown literary talents, including students from our own writing lab, the Detroit Robot Factory.

826michigan provides high-quality, high-energy writing, publishing, and academic enrichment programs including in-school projects, field trips, and family writing labs to students aged 6 to 18 in Detroit, Ann Arbor, and Ypsilanti. Last year, our volunteers provided 20,000 hours of service in support of more than 3,500 students. These programs are offered at no cost to schools or families thanks to the generosity of supporters like you. Join us in sustaining programs that offer students the freedom to explore, ask questions, become themselves, and write the stories our world needs to hear.

This year we are honored to be joined by Rochelle Riley, Director of Arts and Culture for the city of Detroit. The author, essayist, and arts advocate ended a nearly 20-year stint in 2019 as a columnist for the Detroit Free Press, where she was a leading voice for children, education, competent government, and race. She is author of The Burden:
African Americans and the Enduring Impact of Slavery (Wayne State University Press, 2018) and the upcoming That They Lived: Twenty African Americans Who Changed The World (WSU Press, 2020). Rochelle has won numerous awards, including two National Headliner Awards (2019 and 2004) for best local column writing, the 2017 Eugene C. Pulliam Editorial Fellowship from the Society of Professional Journalists, and the 2017 Ida B. Wells Award from the National Association of Black Journalists for her outstanding efforts to make news rooms and news coverage more accurately reflect the diversity of the communities they serve. She was a 2016 inductee into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame and a 2019 inductee into the N.C. Media and Journalism Hall of Fame.
