Event Press Release for Seattle Slack Key Festival November 10, 2019
The 11th Annual Seattle Slack Key Festival is produced by the Naalehu Theatre and is sponsored by Outrigger Resorts. The festival includes a full day of entertainment and features many of Hawai'i's Master Musicians including: Jerry Santos, Kamuela Kimokeo with Hiikua, John Keawe, Jeff Peterson, Kunia Galdeira, Sonny Lim, Roddy Lopez, Greg Sardinha, Patrick Landeza, Elias Kauhane and more. Emcees Braddah Gomes along with Rhonda Mokihana Burk and Hula Halau Pulamahiaikelikolehua add to this fantastic line-up. We'll also enjoy Hawai'i's tropical flowers and prize drawings.

There will be two sessions in Slack Key and Ukulele. Additional instructors may join the classes. Cost is $40 per session. Pay at session.

Nana ka maka; ho'olohe ka pepeiao -watch with the eyes, and listen with the ears. Thus, one learns. This traditional method provides the perfect instruction to this rich tradition. Students of all levels will be guided through simple exercises and solos to create the slack key sound.
Slack key can be played on any guitar, acoustic or electric. The term refers to both the musical style and the myriad ways the instrument is tuned. Instructors teach several traditional tunings. In addition, you'll learn the use of vibrato, harmonics, slurs, harmonies in thirds and sixths, legato playing and other musical ideas that have helped create a distinctive guitar sound. This lush finger-picking style will add new sounds and flavors to your entire repertoire.
Participation is limited. Students must bring their own guitar or ukulele.
