Emerging Drugs of Abuse and Utilization of Pharmacogenetics for Behavioral Health Treatment

6 CEU Hours
Sponsored By Affinity Counseling and Treatment
Water Resources Education Center
4600 SE Columbia Way, Vancouver, Washington
Registration fee: $50 for Agency Members/$75 Non-member/$50 Student

Millennium Labs will be providing lunch at this training to allow participants more time to networks and participate in Q&A around substances of abuse and testing for drugs.

Current agency members include: Affinity Counseling and Treatment, Catholic Community Services of Western Washington, Lifeline Connections, Providence Health and Services, Recovery Village at Ridgefield, and Western Psychological and Counseling Services.

Goal of Training
Emerging substances of abuse continue to be a growing and dangerous trend in the U.S. Synthetic and designer drugs can be widely available, very potent and dangerous, and difficult to identify and detect. This presentation focuses on helping clinical and medical audiences to better understand prevalence and use trends, pharmacologic actions, signs and symptoms of use, and urine drug testing (UDT) implications for emerging drugs of abuse.

Additionally, this training will introduce participants to the emerging practice of pharmacogenetic testing (PGT) and its application for improving the treatment of mental health and substance use disorders. Through use of genetic testing, providers can optimize drug therapy to ensure maximum efficacy with minimal adverse effects. Such approaches promise the advent of personalized medicine, in which drugs and drug combinations are optimized for each individual's unique genetic makeup. PGT and UDT paired with clinical expertise can provide critical information about medication and substance use and can help clinicians monitor and support decisions about medication therapy.

Behavioral Objectives
Upon completion of this session participants will be able to:
- Identify contemporary landscape and changing trends in drugs of misuse and abuse,
- Describe consequences of drug misuse, abuse, and addiction,
- Document reasons for drug testing, review of test results and use of results in the treatment plan to support medical necessity,
- Discuss how genetic variations may allow clinicians to more effectively understand medication response, and
- Understand how PGT may provide valuable, objective information for more personalized therapy in mental health and substance use disorder treatment.
