Magick 101: Magic Squares in History and Practice
While many western occultists see magic squares as just sigil generators, they have a long and varied history as occult/magic/cosmological/symbolic tools in many cultures -- from being a cosmological diagram that forms the building blocks of the I-Ching and Feng Shui to influencing city planning, from an algorithm for creating magical perfumes and a tool to creating beautiful mandalas to amulets that guard Jain temples or mathematically call on the name of Allah, from planetary sigils in Renaissance Europe to sigil work that influences artists to this day.
This workshop will combine a historic overview of the use of magic squares in history and how this versatile tool has adapted to the needs of cultures as it's traveled, with a basic hands on component.
No math skills necessary, we promise.
PRESENTER:
Gene has been an occultist since his teens. A member of an east coast based Wiccan tradition, and a former Freemason, he has presented at multiple pagan conferences, including Pantheacon in San Jose. His interest in magic squares is a product of his life long fascination with symbolism and his love of history.
ACCESS:
Please note that the Wicked Grounds Annex space at 293 8th St is ADA friendly once upstairs, but stairs are the only means of ingress and egress to the Wicked Grounds Annex space. If you have any questions, please message the event organizers and we will do our best to answer them!
