Kitsap Heritage Parks offer forest trails teeming with photographic opportunities, but they present some serious challenges as well  for example, how do you make something stand out in a photo when everything is green and brown? In this two hour guided expedition, we'll look at some of those challenges and some solutions. And you'll have a chance to actually try out some techniques for creating forest scenes that are visually alive, whether you favor visual abstractions or want to tell the stories of elements of the forest. Hint: wear some brightly colored clothes so that you and other participants can serve as color-contrast models in each others shots.

In this expedition, w'ell walk about 2 miles on dirt trails with some roots providing tripping hazards. A tripod isn't necessary but can be fun if you'd like to experiment with some advanced techniques. The exact location of the trailhead will be provided as the date draws nearer.

After the expedition, participants will be invited to submit a few of their best images, and several will be chosen for an expedition gallery to be included in Salish Magazine (https://www.salishmagazine.org/). All photo skill levels are invited.

About John F. Williams

Around the turn of the century, I began filming underwater in Puget Sound and producing short, educational videos. For several years I produced a TV series (SEA-Inside: Pacific Northwest) that aired on over 60 community stations around the country.  In recent years, I've been spending more time in our local forests, and focusing more on still photography.

Over the last couple of decades, my outdoor experiences have been enriched by the insights of knowledgeable people  what I learned from them dramatically changed both the way I see things, and the way I strive to portray things. So in the last 6 months I've been publishing Salish Magazine (salishmagazine.org)  a platform for sharing insights by offering a wealth of articles that are keyed to the observable, but pull back the curtains to reveal the invisible.
