Symposium Dates:
Friday, September 20, 2019 - Sunday, September 22, 2019

The upcoming event will showcase the broader context of design science principles seen in many systems and communities, varied connections to our natural world and sustainable system, innovation and planning initiatives. Past design science symposia have wonderfully demonstrated the aesthetics and innovation possible at the intersection of design and science. In 2019, the symposium will shift to demonstrate how, through multiple cultural lenses, this framework can address the complex, real world problems we face today.

As we live in a world rich with multiple biomes, living entities, and cultures, it is crucial to recognize and apply these diverse life forms, social forms, and ways of knowing to support robustness in societies. All voices are necessary and we believe that in order to achieve progress and enhance our connection to the Earth, we need to encourage variety and plurality in how communities move toward a sustainable and nature-connected future.

Equitability and inclusivity on multiple scales are essential to not only make the world work for 100% of humanity, but all of the biosphere. To this end, the upcoming symposium aims to incorporate various cultural perspectives, knowledge systems, ways of relating to nature and creative problem solving. It will share and challenge what we know, question our preconceived notions of what human-nature relationships, sustainability, and innovation look like.

This year's themes include:

1) Ways of KnowingChallenging Predominant Understandings of Epistemologies:
How do alternative and inclusive ways of knowing nature address environmental challenges and support a resilient environment?
2) Current and Future Communities:
How can moving from a global to a local community perspective in sustainability foster robust futures while supporting local needs and initiatives?
3) Rebuilding Solidarity in Nature
How can moving away from an anthropocentric approach to sustainability both support biodiversity and strengthen societies?
4) Equitable Technology
How can innovative technology, practices and artifacts be applied to systemic change?
5) NarrativesValuing Cultural Inclusion
How can efforts towards a healthy and sustainable future be informed by the values and perspectives of traditional, indigenous, and non-western communities?

The symposium is hosted by the Edna W. Lawrence Nature Lab at RISD, Fleet Library at RISD, and Synergetics Collaborative
