An Afternoon Tea with Phoebe Hearst
Community Church of Atascadero
Atascadero, CA
Share this event:

This exciting performance and afternoon tea with tea and scones and other tea goodies is an historic tribute to the woman who provided so much inspiration for the treasured Hearst Castle, a state monument dedicated to the memory of two people; to William Randolph Hearst, who built it, and his mother Phoebe Apperson Hearst, who inspired it. Phoebe Hearst was one of the most influential philanthropists in the late19th and early 20th centuries. She founded organizations and sponsored innovations that affect Americans every day. Mount Vernon, the National Cathedral, UC Berkeley and the PTA are just a few of the institutions that, if not for the little lady from California, might not exist for the 21st century public. Karen Harris has studied Phoebe Hearst as part of her work with the Hearst Castle.  She will be in costume and performing as Phoebe,
Bringing back the Chautauqua education movement stressing history:   Chautaqua was an adult education movement in the United States, highly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Chautauqua assemblies expanded and spread throughout rural America until the mid-1920s. The Chautauqua brought entertainment and culture for the whole community, with speakers, teachers, musicians, showmen, preachers, and specialists of the day.  Former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt was quoted as saying that Chautauqua is "the most American thing in America."
