Cypher Culture Conference Main Event
Cypher Culture Conference (April 25th - 28th) Main Event:
The Abyss: A House Dance Experience & The Book of Styles: Popping Competition. April 27th, 2019 1pm - 9pm
The Book Of Styles Boogaloo/Popping Competition, presented by Assassins DC, Urban Artistry & Funk in Focus, is about celebrating the traditions and many schools of thought of Funk dances from California. From the mid 60's til date, this Funk Culture has spread globally and taken different shapes, molding it self to each cities culture. All participating dancers will take part in a 45 minute cypher, showcasing their honest, individual styles. From that 45 minute cypher, 8 dancers will be chosen by 3 qualified judges to re-enter the cypher together for an additional 30 minutes. The top 8 cypher will also be where the "Book of Styles" (Digital Wheel of Funk) starts to get incorporated. Following the top 8 cypher, the judges will then choose the top 2 contestants to move into the final exchange, head to head for 20-25 minutes. The winner will be flown to Washington DC to take part in the final installment of The Book of Styles during the International Soul Society Festival, June 21st - 23rd.
The ABYSS, presented by Assassins DC and Urban Artistry, offers a new perspective on producing house dance experiences, by focusing on and honoring the most essential elements of house dance culture: the human spirit and cypher participation. Encouraging all dancers who enjoy dancing to house music to participate, even if you don't initially identify as a "house dancer". The pre-selection round will consist of 1-on-1 showcases, with each participant getting one, reasonably timed run. Dancers, one dancer, or neither dancer will advance. An Advisory Committee, made up of House Dance professionals will choose 12 (or more) dancers to advance to the final cypher session. The final cypher will be a one-hour cypher of uninterrupted exchanges between the chosen dozen from pre-selection. The 12 (or more) finalists will choose a winner amongst themselves. Each dancer will have one vote, but cannot vote for himself/herself. The dancer with a majority of the votes will be the winner. Should there be a tie(s), those receiving the highest number of votes will be given a chance to concede to the dancer(s) that they believe is the winner. If the dancers choose to continue, they will return to the cypher for an additional 30 minutes or the final exchange. During this final exchange, all dancers have the right to concede and proclaim the opponent(s) the winner. If no one concedes during or after the final exchange, the Advisory Committee will choose a winner from those remaining, based on technique, musicality, originality and artistry. Qualifiers will be held in various cities throughout the world and of those qualifiers; the warriors selected will then compete at the final qualifier in DC. This is the final ABYSS Cypher at the International Soul Society Festival weekend in Washington DC, June 21st - 23rd.
