Broad Statements
In honor of International Womens Day, The Rhythm Method presents the second annual iteration of Broad Statements, a mini-festival celebrating the fantastic breadth and diversity of creative music-making by women in and around New York City. This years lineup will feature sets by vocalist, percussionist, composer, writer and community facilitator  Anaïs Maviel, experimental composer, performer, and sound artist Viola Yip, performance artist, composer, and horn player Nicolee Kuester, and, of course, The Rhythm Method, playing their own work as well as Tonia Ko's ethereal "Escape/Landscape."

There will be a brief reception following the performance, and drinks and snacks will be available throughout the evening!

About the Artists:

Nicolee Kuester makes things to be seen-heard-experienced out of sounds, bodies, texts, and small objects. Of particular interest are things that change slowly and quietly, things that cannot be very well explained, things that take an uncomfortably long time, and new ways that performing bodies might come together into careful and strange spaces. Her performance work crops up on both coasts of the United States, in Norway, in Switzerland, and in front of baffled teenagers in North Carolina. She is otherwise gainfully employed playing the French horn.

Experimental composer, performer, and sound artist, Viola Yip will be performing an audiovisual set, using the electric flow and the vibrations of flickering light bulbs as a sound source, and exploring the musical possibilities in the common ground between the vibrations of light and sound.

Praised as "fierce, fearless, and virtuosic unapologetically stylistically omnivorous and versatile (New Music Box), The Rhythm Method strives to reimagine the string quartet in a contemporary, feminist context. The four performer-composers of The Rhythm Method continually expand their sonic and expressive palette through the use of graphic notation, vocalization, improvisation, and performance. Their set for the second annual iteration of Broad Statements will feature new works by Leah Asher and Meaghan Burke (the quartet's violinist and cellist, respectively), as well as Tonia Ko's ethereal "Escape/Landscape" for string quartet.
