CANCELLED!!!! THE SPIRIT OF US SLAVE MUSIC WORKSHOP
Because tape recorders did not exist on the slave plantations, no one can say they ever heard a 17th-19th century African slave sing (play musical instruments, or dance). It was not until after the slaves were set free that whites arranged these songs onto sheet music, with the assistance of blacks, of course, making them civilized, duplicatable, and of course, marketable. We can only imagine the essence of the sound of slave songs based on the music we have heard coupled with the circumstances under which the songs were sung.
Dr. Jacqueline Lawrence, Founder and CEO of Legacy Showcases and former student and choir member of the world renown Tuskegee Institute Choir, through her research, has captured the essence of the spirit of freedom, hope, and survival, and combined it with songs sung by the slaves.
Attendees of all ethnicities and ages will:
Gain an understanding of the spirit captured in what has evolved into todays music Learn the art of singing in the authentic, unrehearsed, unformed, uncivilized, and individually heartfelt style and dialect of the African slave Utilize a variety of singing formats such as moans, field hollas, and the call and response Learn a variety of songs commonly sang during work, religious ceremonies, and recreation Learn a variety of dances such as the Ring Shout, The Walkaround, and De Hambone
