Workshop Descriptions:

Daniel Ward - Melodic Meditations
This is a brand new workshop. We'll be looking at the first couple of studies from a new companion book to "Arpeggio Meditations". Simple melodies that wind through some easy chords will give you a chance to make your uke sing in a new way, as well as prepare the way for single note melodies and tasty chord melody style.

Daniel Ward - Latin & World Strums
Here is your chance to learn the sexy secrets of Latin and World right-hand techniques, from someone with more than  25 years experience in the genre, Daniel Ward. We'll learn (and practice) the strums and picking styles needed to help create a spicy palette that you can sprinkle on any song.  Flamenco, Rhumba, Bossa Nova, and even Reggae styles will be broken down into clear and easy-to-learn steps. By the time we finish you will possess brand new skills that will dazzle your listeners!! and Clean easy to read handouts to help you remember them.

Heidi Swedberg -HAWAIIAN for BEGINNERS and up
Haina ia mai ana ka puana! Get started with Hawaiian language by learning a few simple songs with deep roots. Popoki Make a Cat employs the Hawaiian turn-around sound, & Kahuli Aku is a traditional chant set to Winona Beamer music . Bonus: seated hula!

Heidi Swedburg - MONKEY AROUND beginners and up
Learn the folk song Monkey When You Grow Old with a do-wacka-do strum! Then learn how to monkey around with the lyrics. This class adds a fun song to your repitoire, works on a classic strum and can expand into second position chords, if the class is ready. The most fun part is delving into lyric improvisation.

Jeff Davis - Intro to U-Bass Workshop
This is your chance to attend a U-Bass petting zoo - up close and personal! Youll get to try three kinds of U-Basses - the common Rumbler, steel string U-Bass, and fretless U-Bass. The bass has a unique role in the ukulele jam, anchoring the rhythm and rounding out the sound. Youll get hands-on practice to hear & feel moments where bass notes are needed & appreciated by everyone in a jam. Bass tuning is different than ukulele but still just four strings to keep track of. If you already have a U-Bass or standard electric bass guitar, bring it to this workshop and start learning some tips and tricks to get you going. Bring your ukulele too, Janet Lenore will team up with Jeff to encourage every player in the room to see and feel how the bass fits into the uke strummers world.

Janet Lenore - Play & Sing the Beatles - Yeah yeah yeah!
Almost exactly a year ago, Prince William knighted Sir Richard Starkey. We are going to celebrate this anniversary with a selection of fun and upbeat songs written or sung by the Beatle known and loved as "Ringo." We will throw some other Beatles tunes in as well, all selected for both charm and playability. Tired of playing? Come sing along with the band! Jeff accompanies on u-bass.

Sheridan Malone - Triad Secrets for Better Harmony
                           (Right Under Your Ukulele Fingertips)
If you play ukulele, you likely take pleasure in singing. Even more pleasurable is singing harmony with others. In this class we'll show how essential vocal harmony parts lat right under your fingers. We'll touch on smidgen of triad building block theory, and try to sing a few tunes together, and find parts that fit the song. You should be able to play 5-6 chords easily while you sing, but anyone can join in the fun!

Sheridan Malone -Beyond Strumming - Cool Double-stop Leads,     Licks, and Fills
Under every closed chord (no open strings) lies a simple scale and twin string pairing to add melody leads, licks, & instrumentals on nearly any song or style.  Sheridan will show you to play nifty intros, fills, and outros anywhere on the neck and in any key. You can even double up on melodies!
Skill level: Intermediate and up. You should be able to play a closed Bb chord shape and G chord shape on all four strings, and be able to switch easily to other positions and shapes.

Teacher Bio Info:

Heidi Swedberg
Heidi Swedberg was born in Hawaii, the youngest in a family of of four girls where music was a regular part of family life. Singing at church, in the car or around the piano are her most treasured memories. When she was 5 years old the Easter Bunny left ukuleles for all four Swedberg girls, and she has played one ever since. Her family relocated to New Mexico, where she grew up in suburban Albuquerque. Her love of literature led her to acting, and she studied at the University of New Mexico before moving to Kentucky to study as an acting apprentice and costume intern at Actors Theatre of Louisville.  While there, she was cast in her first film, Norman Jewisons In Country, launching a 20+ year career in film and television. Having children re-focused her life. Singing and playing ukulele with them brought her so much joy that she found herself drifting away from auditions and into the classroom. Teaching led to recording which led to performing. Collaborating with Daniel Ward opened vast musical doorways. Heidi enjoys sharing music with all ages. She especially loves performing in schools, museums and libraries, which she considers the saviours of the universe.

Daniel Ward
Daniel Ward was born in the atomic city of Los Alamos NM, where his father was a scientist and classical music conductor.     Since then, he has become a premier ukulele performer and clinician known for his command of Latin and world styles, with an expressive right hand that delivers beauty, speed and force. He has been a featured performer and workshop instructor at festivals across the United States and abroad and enjoys contributing lessons to both Ukulele Magazine and Acoustic Guitar Magazine. His CD El Ukulele is an adventure in what the ukulele can do.
Daniel is known as a teacher who can break down complicated forms and techniques in ways that enable players of all levels to absorb and enjoy the material. He is a well-rounded musician, who loves working with children and adults. As a performer and a teacher, Daniel believes the ukulele holds an important place in music and music education for all ages.
