Gian Carlo Menotti's "Amahl and the Night Visitors" is a retelling of the tale of the Three Magi (Wise Men or Kings)  from the perspective of Amahl, a young, crippled boy.

Amahl, a poor crippled boy, sees a giant star in the night sky. He begs his mother to come and look, but she dismisses this unlikely story as another one of his fantasies. She has no place for such foolishness in her thoughts, desperately worried as she is about their impoverished state.

Three kings - Kaspar, Balthazaar, and Melchior - stumble across the small hut of Amahl and his mother as they seek shelter for the night. They are following the great star, and ask for a little time to rest before continuing their journey. While his mother gathers wood for the fire, the ever-curious Amahl asks the kings questions. He tells them that although he was once a shepherd, the sheep had to be sold, and now he and his mother will have to beg for money.

Amahls mother returns, and tells him to call other shepherds to ask them to bring whatever they are able to offer the royal visitors. After he leaves, she remarks on the packages that the kings have brought. They explain that these gifts are for a child, one who will be born a king.

The shepherds arrive with olives, apples, chestnuts, figs, and other offerings which they present to the travelers, and then they bid the kings good night.

The mother is sorely tempted by the kings riches, knowing how even a little of the treasure could go a long way in feeding her hungry child. While everyone sleeps, she tries to steal some of the gold. The Page catches her, and their struggle awakens everyone; Amahl rushes to his mothers defense. With great compassion, King Melchior offers to let her keep the gold, as the Child they seek has no need of it. His earthly kingdom will be for the poor, not only the wealthy. This King will bring life.

Melchiors tender eloquence in describing the Child so inspires the mother that she returns the gold, and expresses her regret that she has nothing of her own to give to such a King. Amahl eagerly suggests his only possession: his crutch, which he has made himself, to send to the Child.
