No More Deaths, a humanitarian aid organization, is excited to host a fundraising event with Luis Alberto Urrea, author of The Devils Highway. An Evening with Luis Alberto Urrea will be moderated by local Arizona Star columnist and La Estrella editor, Ernesto Portillo, Jr. and will be held at the YWCA, 525 Bonita Avenue, Tucson. No More Deaths was founded in 2004 in response to the disaster of migrant deaths unfolding the in the US-Mexico borderlands. Urreas, The Devils Highway, published in 2004, brought to light the desperation that drives immigrants to travel north and the U.S. border policies that force them to walk in the most inhospitable, deadly corridor in the Southwest desert commonly known as The Devils Highway. No More Deaths volunteers provide lifesaving water, food and medical aid in these remote corridors today.
Urrea, a Tucson favorite son, held the release party for his latest novel, The House of Broken Angels, this year at the Tucson Festival of Books. A member of the Latino Literature Hall of Fame, Urrea is the critically acclaimed and best-selling author of 16 books and contributor to many others. The Devils Highway won the Lannan Literary Award and was a finalist for the 2005 Pulitzer Prize and the Pacific Rim Kiriyama Prize. It is used in many classrooms across the country. More than 100 cities and colleges have chosen Into the Beautiful North, The Devils Highway or The Hummingbirds Daughter (or another Urrea book)for a community read.
The evening will begin with a 5:30 pm reception with the author. Tickets for event and reception are $50 each. Guests have the option of purchasing a ticket for the event only ($35), which begins at 7:00 pm. Ticket sales will open on September 4, 2018 and numbers are limited. Proceeds of this event will go to fund the growth of No More Deaths work. Supporters who are unable to attend the event are invited to make a donation toward a ticket for a volunteer.
