Punching Up Workshop with Kate Symes and Lisa Kays
How many times have you felt stuck in a scene that feels yucky with no clue how to get out of it? You've hit a sensitive topic and you don't want to go near it. You're frozen, begging for someone to end the scene. We all end up in scenes from time to time, often by accident, where racist, sexist, themes or difficult, not-funny topics come up and you're knee-deep in a scene you only want out of.

So, let's talk about it.

This workshop helps address the question, "WHAT DO I DO when I hate the scene I'm in and I kind of hate my scene partner or myself for getting us into this situation?"

This non-judgmental, experiential workshop for beginning and advanced improvisers teaches you how to pro-actively deal with these moments and find in them opportunities to grow and make the world (and your scene) a better, more fun, safer place. We'll spend time working through your real-life "get me out of this" scenarios from classes and shows. We're going to give you practical advice and techniques for how to handle them, rather than avoid them.

Because you can count on sensitive subjects coming up in improv scenes. You can't close your eyes, stick your fingers in your ears, and sing lalalalala - and you shouldn't. Your job as a skilled improviser is to dig into life in all its beautiful, ugly glory, and to do that with grace, curiosity, and compassion. Your job is to make comedy without making fun.

NOTE: We want this workshop to be accessible to anyone who has an interest. If you want to attend but finances are a barrier, please email lisa@lisakays.com to request a scholarship.
