Rachel and friends share tips, free tools and low-cost resources for guiding your teenager through the college application maze. Lack of transparency can hang like a dark cloud around the college admissions process. But many parts are easy to understand, if you just know where to look. We will cover understanding the admissions landscape, how to factor in the cost of college, how to make a college list, how to understand your student's chances, college visits, prepping for the SAT/ACT/subject tests without using tutors.

The Road to College: From Ninth Grade Through Senior Year of High School
An overview of high school as preparation for applying to college: what really matters and what's just noise. And a timeline for high school parents: what to do, when to do it, and what's coming next.
Are grades equally important all four years? How do colleges compare students from different schools, some with lots of APs and some with few? How important is the SAT/ACT, and what about Subject Tests? When should students take these tests and how many times? How about college visits? College essays and applications: the peaks and valleys, the do's and don'ts. Timeframes for Early Action, Early Decision, Regular Decision and Rolling Decision -- what's the difference, anyway? How do I make a list of colleges we can actually afford? When are financial aid applications due and when will I find out how much it's all going to cost? The additional drama and audition schedule for actors, musicians, artists -- and the extra track and timeline for sports recruits. Come away with a framework, a timeline handout and a renewed sense of control.

Continued from December. Rachel and friends share more free tools and low-cost resources for guiding your teenager through the college application maze. We will cover: Early Decision/Early Action issues, go-to resources for the essay, how to write supplementary essays for individual colleges, the various application management systems (Common App, Coalition Application, UCAS, etc.), interviewing, and making the final decision of where to attend. Building on a popular topic from Part 1, we'll review how to assess a student's chances and develop a well balanced college list in the first place. We'll also touch on circumstances when you may be considering outside assistance and how to look for a trustworthy college coach.

How to Predict the Bottom Line Cost of Colleges You Are Considering
A deep dive into financial aid with a user-friendly expert who knows the territory inside out. Understanding financial aid early on enables you to make informed decisions and good choices for adding colleges to your list. How to identify your child's need and merit profile and match that with college awarding policies so you can identify affordable colleges. Estimating the 4-year bottom line: how much will you pay for a college degree? How can you estimate how much college debt you'll need? How can you decide if college debt is reasonable and affordable? What are the pros and cons of different kinds of loans? Take the mystery out of predicting college costs, especially if you are in the middle class squeeze.
SPEAKER: Bill Smith, of ScholarFITS LLC, a college financial aid counseling service. www.scholarfits.com. Bill worked with colleges such as MIT and Yale to program their financial aid policies into online Net Price Calculators (NPCs). He also became an expert in packaging, the process colleges use to determine how much merit aid and need-based aid to award, and the mix of gift aid, loans, and work-study. His early work made him the go-to resource and author of white papers when the federal government mandated that all colleges offer an NPC to prospective families. Bill holds a BA from Williams College and an MBA from Northwestern.

Go Global! International College Options for American High School Students
There are many reasons to consider college options outside of the USA. Cost, for one, as a bachelors degree in England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales or Canada can end up being half the cost of an equivalent education here. And in the Netherlands, the cost can be even lower. Employers are looking for sophisticated, culturally competent young hires, and pursuing a degree abroad says a lot about your independence and maturity. And all that incredible travel and world exploration! You may also have concerns around this big step. What kind of students thrive? Will they be safe? And how do they fit back into the US system for grad school and internships? Come away with a fuller understanding of the pros and cons of this exciting option.
