UPDATE: If you are from out of town please contact us - usk.seattle@gmail.com - before making travel arrangements, especially airline reservations. We've had to make some last minute changes on some workshops.
LEARNING GOALS: Workshop students will explore several different approaches by doing a series of studies using markers or graphite. The following skills will help students understand how to simplify shapes and values for drawings with greater visual impact: Seeing the sky shape! Merging adjacent shapes to create simpler/stronger forms. Using a variety of shapes to design effective compositions.
WORKSHOP PLAN: 30 min - Look at and discuss examples from Sues sketchbooks. 30 min - Demo - Finding shapes
45 min - Practice - 3 or 4 small sketches with marker.
15 min - Demo - Starting a sketch with a key shape.
60 min - Practice - Students start and build their own sketch.
30 min - Throwdown and review
SUPPLY LIST: 20 - 25 sheets of printer/copier paper or similar lightweight sketch paper. A clipboard or board to draw on. 3 grayscale markers in light/medium/dark. Brand and color suggestions are listed below, but any comparable markers will be fine. Bring some of your usual sketching materials for a final drawing. Weather-appropriate clothing. Marker suggestions: Prismacolor and Copic are alcohol-based markers, which can bleed through most papers. A good range for sketching is 30% (light), 60% (medium) and 90% (dark). Faber Castell Pitt Artist Brush Markers are water/pigment based. I love these because they dont bleed through paper. They come in small and large brush tips. I use tones I (light), III (medium) and IV (dark) in warm gray or cool gray. Tombow makes a nice water-based, double-ended marker. Three good grays are N55 (light), N75 (medium) and N35 (dark). INSTRUCTOR INFO: Sue Heston is a Seattle Urban Sketcher who has been keeping a sketchbook since her college days. With a background in printmaking, she is drawn to interesting shapes and strong contrasts. She believes in regularly exercising your sketching muscles and always being prepared for unexpected sketching opportunities. sueheston.blogspot.com Flickr: susanhtwo Instagram: sue.heston
