From Afar: Rendering Atmospheric Perspective in Watercolor
Lynn Street Mini Park
Seattle, WA
Share this event:

UPDATE: If you are from out of town please contact us - usk.seattle@gmail.com - before making travel arrangements, especially airline reservations. We've had to make some last minute changes on some workshops.

LEARNING GOALS:
1. Understand different methods of showing atmospheric perspective.
Its all about contrasts: darks vs. lights, levels of detail, soft vs. hard edges
Take advantage of watercolors transparency.
Use color theory to achieve believable atmosphere (more important than accurate!).
2. Express atmospheric perspective through counterpoint techniques. For example:
soft shapes in background vs. rigidly defined objects in foreground
warm in front vs. cool in back
blocky shapes vs. fine lines
3. Visually communicate a lot with a little.
Concentrate detail in limited areas  the eye will fill in the rest.
Use the squinting technique: See the important shapes and values, remove unnecessary details
Dont try to be photorealistic; communicate the overall impression of a background.

WORKSHOP PLAN:
Time
Topic
Comments
10 min
Intro to atmospheric perspective theory
Examples and photos by myself and by other
artists.

25 min
Painting demo
I will quickly sketch a full scene in watercolor, with emphasis on the far background layer.

30 min
Students work on technique
Paint the distant landscape out of focus, not
worrying about foreground for the moment. The short sketch period lets the teaching material sink in, while the constrained time period will keep sketchers moving quickly.
15 min
Brief show & tell and critique
Tips about how to improve in the next session.

70 min
Students work on exercise
A more in-depth sketch, including the foreground this time, while observing atmospheric perspective painting techniques.
15 min
Final throwdown
Show and tell; words of affirmation

SUPPLY LIST:
Watercolor paints of choice.
Paper: A few sheets, 8.5x11" to 11x14". Any watercolor paper will work, preferably cold press. I also like to use Bristol board.
Brushes: One broad/large brush and one finer brush. The larger brush should be about 5/8" at the smallest, up to about 1" at the largest. Flat or round: The small brush should be round or have a pointed tip, about size 6 ("), NOT a tiny detail brush. (Bring additional tools that youre comfortable with.)

INSTRUCTOR INFO: Eleanor Doughty, a native Virginian, now lives in Seattle amongst the mist and conifers. She graduated with a BFA in illustration from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2013 and is proud to continue to work in her field as a freelance illustrator. She has successfully funded two Kickstarter campaigns related to drawing and traveling and has completed sketching trips on five continents (most recently to South America). Her illustrations have been featured in publications such as Graphite Magazine and the Boston Globe, and she is a frequent illustration contributor to Broadly on VICE. Eleanor is also a co-founder of Brunch Club, a sketching meetup/teaching group in NYC.
