Social media has been weaponized, as state hackers and rogue terrorists have seized upon Twitter and Facebook to create chaos and destruction. This urgent report is required reading, from defense experts P.W. Singer and Emerson T. Brooking.
LikeWar: The Weaponization of Social Media is an ambitious and thoroughly researched book by in-demand defense strategist P.W. Singer (Ghost Fleet; Wired for War) and Emerson Brooking that answers big questions like, why do things go viral online? What really happened in Russian operations vs US politics? How do online bots work? What is the future of online war and AI? And so much more. The book highlights how social media has changed war and politics, and, in turn, war and politics has changed social media. It uses a mix of the latest research and interviews to reveal whats behind everything from how Trump uses Twitter to the rise of ISIS and Taylor Swift, from Israel's web warrior units to Silicon Valley's new role in battle, and what all these trends mean for the future of not just war, but everything online.
-- P. W. Singer is a strategist at New America, an editor at Popular Science, and the author of several best-selling books, including Wired for War and Ghost Fleet. He has been named by the Smithsonian as one of the nation's 100 leading innovators, by Defense News as one of the 100 most influential people in defense issues, by Foreign Policy to their Top 100 Global Thinkers List, as an official "Mad Scientist" for the U.S. Army's Training and Doctrine Command, and by Onalytica social media data analysis as one of the ten most influential voices in the world on cybersecurity and 25th most influential in the field of robotics. Previously he worked in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Harvard University, and as the founding director of the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence at Brookings, where he was the youngest person named senior fellow in its 100 year history.
