ELIAS ALEXANDER RETURNS TO ASHLAND TO PRIMIERE HIS NEW CYCLE OF SONGS BORN OUTSIDE
Elias Alexander with his band, featuring stellar local musicians, will appear at 7:30pm April 22nd at The Havurah in Ashland, 185 N Mountain Ave. Ashland, OR 97520. Tickets $20 at the door, $18 at The Music Coop or brownpapertickets.com. Student/low income: $10, under 18: free.
An Ashland native, Alexander moved to the East Coast eight years ago to further his musical career, but has maintained roots in Southern Oregon, and performed here with several different groups.
Alexander has built a reputation nationally and internationally singing and playing traditional music on bagpipes, fiddle, and guitar. Hes toured with groups such as his own Soulsha: Afro-Celtic Funk, The Bywater Band, MAC, and Seven Nations, and appeared with international greats such as Alasdair Fraser, Carlos Nuñez, and Gillebride MacMillan.
Last November he appeared in Ashland as composer and musician for the new play Taking Our Lives: Suicide, Ecocide, and Daring to Live, which debuted at Pioneer Hall.
Now Alexander is returning to Ashland to premiere a new cycle of songs thats not totally within the Celtic genre: Born Outside.
This is different from everything Ive ever done, says Alexander, if youve heard my music before theres only been hints at what the new stuff is like.
Rooted in folk, funk and soul, the new songs speak to the times in which we live, exploring themes of struggle and hope.
The Celtic flavor is still there, says Alexander, each song is more or less influenced by it, because its so deeply a part of who I am. But Im revealing other parts of me in this work.
Alexander decided to debut the new songs in his home-town of Ashland because of his love for the community.
Playing with him in the band will be local legends Matthew Kriemelman on drums, Adey Bell on backup vocals and keys, Paul Turnipseed on guitar, Sabrina Valenzuela on backup vocals and Garret Baxter on bass.
This is music that confronts where were at as a nation and as a world. Its not shy, and its groovy. says Alexander.
