For Living Lovers - Brandon Ross & Stomu Takeishi
The March edition of the "&" duos series brings two avant-garde string masters who have chops and credits to spare. But this isn't about cramming in notes. Brandon Ross and Stomu Takeishi create otherworldly soundscapes that are spare, beautiful and haunting. Chamber Music for Improvisers.
Ross and Takeishi's credits speak for themselves: Henry Threadgill, Don Cherry, Cassandra Wilson, Archie Shepp, The Lounge Lizards, Paul Motian, Wynton Marsalis, Oliver Lake, Randy Brecker, Wadada Leo Smith, Bill Laswell, Cuong Vu, Arrested Development, Myra Melford...Not to mention their own groups, including Ross's acclaimed power trio, Harriet Tubman. To this project, they bring that exploratory sensibility and an appreciation for sonic dialogue and the power of dreamlike, unconventional melodies.
Concert followed by a discussion with the musicians.

As always, kids are FREE.

By NJ Transit, take the Montclair-Boonton line to Bay Street--the only station in town that's open on weekends. Exit train at front, walk down platform to Glenridge Avenue, turn left, walk to traffic light, turn right onto Pine Street. 73 See Gallery is a few doors down on the right. BRANDON ROSS
BRANDON ROSS is a guitarist/composer/singer/songwriter, who has performed and recorded with Cassandra Wilson, Henry Threadgill, Jewel, Tony Williams, Arto Lindsay, The Lounge Lizards, Leroy Jenkins, Butch Morris, MeShell Ndegeocello, Moreno Veloso, Arrested Development, Archie Shepp, Muhal Richard Abrams, Don Byron, Lizz Wright, Oliver Lake, Bill Laswell, and many others, crafting a personal approach to guitar, and improvisation, that has taken him all over the world.
He co-leads the avant power trio, Harriet Tubman, with bassist Melvin Gibbs, and drummer JT Lewis. Tubman is dedicated to musical revelation/investigation in a pan-African vernacular. In Harriet Tubman, Ross uses electronics, and pan-tonality to sculpt a multidimensional, interactive, sonic language in a classic R&B/Rock configuration of guitar, bass, and drums. Harriet Tubman has released 2 cds, I Am A Man on Knitting Factory Records, and Prototype (live) on John Zorns Avant Records label. A new CD of the Harriet Tubman Dub-ill 3rio LIVE featuring Ron Miles/DJ Logic/DJ Singe will be released in 2009.

Lewis, bassist Melvin Gibbs and THE REMARKABLY CREATIVE but unsung GUITAR HERO BRANDON ROSS, who combines the linear facility and originality of Joyous Lake-era Pat Martino with the sheer decibels and cathartic abandon of Sharrock and the liquid whammy-bar articulations of Allan Holdsworth. Ross unleashed fuzz-inflected, wah-fueled licks and testified with overdriven bluetones during this searing set, which concluded with a frantic jam that reached a Bad Brains level of intensity. In his acoustic based quartet, Blazing Beauty, Ross plays banjo, electric, acoustic and soprano guitars; uses cornet, acoustic bass guitar, and drumset to extend his expressive field into folk oriented musics and compositional approaches that communicate his dedication to fresh musical experience. Ross has released 2 recordings of this work, Costume, in 2004, and Puppet in 2006, both on Intoxicate Records (Japan), to rave reviews, and several critics best of the year lists.
Ross also composes for his acoustic string duo, For Living Lovers, with acoustic bass guitarist, Stomu Takeishi.
STOMU TAKEISHI
Stomu Takeishi (born 1964, in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan) is a Japanese jazz bass player. He generally plays fretless five-string electric bass guitar, as well as a Klein five-string acoustic bass guitar. He often uses looping or other electronic techniques to enhance the sound of his instrument.
Takeishi began as a koto player. He came to the United States in 1983 to attend the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. After completing his degree in 1986, he moved to Manhattan to continue his studies at The New School. He has lived in New York City ever since.
In the 1990s he began to achieve prominence as an innovative New York jazz bass player, and critics have noted both his adventurous playing and sensitivity to sound and timbre. He has played in many international jazz festivals and often performs at major venues in New York, the United States, and Europe.
He has performed and/or recorded with Don Cherry, Henry Threadgill, Butch Morris, Dave Liebman, Randy Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Paul Motian, Myra Melford, Cuong Vu, Badal Roy, David Tronzo, Erik Friedlander, Satoko Fujii, Laszlo Gardony, Ahmad Mansour and Andy Laster.
In Downbeat's 57th Critics Poll in 2009, Stomu was the poll winner for the category of Electric Bass, Rising Star.
He has been performing all over Mexico with MOLE (Hernan Hecht at drums, Mark Aanderud at piano.)
