Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and other neurobehavioral conditions are brain-based physical disabilities with behavioral symptoms. The brain-based approach to living with, caring for, and teaching individuals impacted by prenatal alcohol exposure and their families acknowledges the source of behaviors - the brain. This approach provides a set of research based best practices to provide accommodations and proactively address and prevent challenging behaviors.
- Learn current information about FASD and Neurobehavioral Conditions - View individuals affected through a new lens and develop individualized accommodations to stop the power struggles - Learn to make person centered accommodations to prevent frustrating behaviors and work differently rather than harder
Suggested audience: parents, support staff, teachers, social workers, psychologists, substance abuse counselors, school counselors, and intellectual/developmental disability providers, as well as other professionals and advocates interested in this subject.
Certificates of Attendance will be provided to all attendees who are present for the entire workshop.
HOSTED BY NCFASD Informed, Inc. & Heather Park Child Development Center
PRESENTER Melissa Elligson lives in Roanoke, Virginia. She holds a Master's degree from Seton Hall University and has spent the past 17 years as an intensive in-home therapist, counselor and trainer. Her passion is working with children and families affected with FASD and neurobehavioral conditions as well as providing national training. She became passionate in this arena over 7 years ago when she became frustrated that traditional models were not working within the community. After thankfully finding Diane Malbin and FASCETS she became a certified trainer in the FASCETS Fetal Alcohol Neurobehavioral Model. She is currently in the process of developing FASCETS East and is working to develop a community based diagnostic clinic in Southwest Virginia.
About NCFASD Informed, Inc. NCFASD Informed was formed by two parents who have struggled with getting others to focus on what their children can do, rather than what they can't. The mission of the all-volunteer, grassroots, nonprofit organization is to create FASD informed communities to empower individuals impacted by prenatal exposure to alcohol. Its vision: a world where individuals with FASD thrive.
