Celebrate Madison's Sister Cities - SALES END 4/9/18
For over thirty years, the citizens of Madison have been creating international friendships with communities around the world.  The Madison Common Council approved our first sister city relationship in 1986 with Arcatao, El Salvador and since then many more have been formed, which currently include: Freiburg, Germany; Vilnius, Lithuania; Camagüey, Cuba; Ainaro, East Timor; Mantova, Italy; Obihiro, Japan; Tepatitlán, Mexico; and our newest sister city of Kanifing, The Gambia, which was established in 2016.

To showcase our sister city programs, we are inviting the community to Celebrate Madison's Sister Cities to be held Saturday, April 14 from 5 to 8 pm at Madison College (Truax campus).  The evening will include welcoming remarks by Madison Mayor Paul Soglin, a keynote address by former Governor Jim Doyle and Jessica Doyle, "Creating international friendships at the grass roots level", entertainment by Madison Youth Choirs, informational and photo displays, refreshments and a delicious buffet dinner.

Mayor Paul Soglin

"Our Sister City partnerships help us establish friendships around the world.  With those friendships, we foster relationships and cultural understanding between our city and country and others.  During these tumultuous times in our nation and world, this is a wonderful way to express our support for our friends in other countries".

Mayor Paul Soglin is the 51st, 54th and 57th Mayor of Madison, elected for tenures in 1973, again in 1989, and 2011. He is now serving in his 20th year.

Mayor Soglin was raised in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, received a BA with honors in history in 1966 and a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Wisconsin.  Following his first tenure, Soglin was a fellow at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Jim and Jessica Doyle

Jessica Doyle currently teaches at Edgewood College.  From 2003-2010 she served as First Lady of Wisconsin.  She developed Read on Wisconsin, a statewide book cub that is now part of the Cooperative Childrens Book Center and a Wisconsin geography game.  Jessica spent over three decades as a teacher or administrator in public schools and as a Peace Corps volunteer in Tunisia.  She attended Northwestern University and UW-Madison.  Jessica and her husband Jim live in Madison and have two grown sons and three grandchildren.

Governor Jim Doyle served as the 44th governor of the state of Wisconsin first elected in 2002 and re-elected in 2006. Governor Doyle was recognized as a national leader in health care, energy, natural resources, biotechnology and many other areas.  Governor Doyle is currently of counsel at the law firm of Foley & Lardner, the chair of the Board of Trustees of the Kaiser Family Foundation and a board member of Exact Sciences.  He has been a senior fellow at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard School of Public Health.  He teaches at the University of Wisconsin-Madison La Follette School of Public Affairs.

Madison Youth Choirs

Since 2003, when Madison Boychoir and Madison Childrens Choir combined nearly 50 years of artistic excellence to become Madison Youth Choirs, MYC has inspired over 5,000 young people in our community to find and share their voices.  MYC welcomes singers of all ability levels, challenging them to learn more than just notes and rhythms.  For the academic year 2017 - 18, MYC is exploring the music of Madisons sister cities as the central theme of their programs http://www.madisonyouthchoirs.org/.

Celebrate Madison's Sister Cities is our way of sharing with the community the activities and value of the nine Madison sister city organizations https://www.cityofmadison.com/sister-cities.  Our sister city organizations were established to bring the citizens of Madison closer to citizens around the world.  Mutual visits with our sister cities in Cuba, East Timor, El Salvador, The Gambia, Germany, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, and Mexico have occurred since our first sister city was created in 1986.  As a result, we know the value these exchanges represent and the significance of celebrating our differences as well as our shared humanity and hope to convey that through this event.
