Wet Felting in a Bag
With Sue Nichols
Saturday 9am-12pm
All Skill Levels.
Participants will learn how to lay out roving to maintain the integrity of the piece they are felting. Through the use of resists participants will create a vessel, scenic mat, or whatever their imagination brings.
Wet felting in a bag is ideal for those who have limited space for crafting - anyone can do it in a small area without the mess.
Indigo Loves Shibori

Indigo loves shibori, so let's fan the flames of that romance!
Learn the secrets of a totally natural indigo vat made using kitchen ingredients, create patterns on cloth by clamping, tying and stitching, then marry the two for exciting results! Students will go home with the recipe, shibori handouts and bits of dyed cloth.
**Recommendation: follow up this class with Sunday's Natural Dye class to achieve a full range of natural colors through overdyeing**
Spinning Textured Art Yarn on a Wheel: Fun and Functional Cores & Curls

Intermediate Wheel Spinning Skill Level
Expand your spinning skills and learn how to core spin yarn, from smooth to textured. We will use lofty, fluffy fiber from a carded prep, along with a commercial mohair core and a cotton core. Learn the difference of using one over the other or don't use a core at all! Get ideas on other cores you can use and add-ins to your yarns to really make them one-of-a-kind. Also learn how to spin with locks, whether the locks are thick/thin, long/short, stuck together, or silky individual curls. Lets spin some wild, funky yarn!
Must have a good relationship with your wheel, be able to spin a basic yarn, and know basic plying.
Visible Mending: Prolonging the Life of Your Clothes With Beautiful Stitching

Visible mending is a nod to the traditions of prolonging the life of our clothes and our fabrics through the art of caring for them. Students will learn techniques borrowed from the Japanese - Sashiko stitches and Boro cloth - and our own quilting roots.
Students will begin the class by creating small pouches and practice stitching on them before beautifying their own garments.

Intermediate Knitting Skill Level
Which yarn should I buy for this sweater (shawl, socks, hat, afghan)? What would be a good knitting project for the yarn I just bought? Which yarn would be a good substitute for the yarn recommended in this pattern? We will address these questions as well as details about yarn properties (fiber content, yarn structure, softness, elasticity, strength, smoothness, sheen, drape, durability, wrinkle), how to read yarn labels, selection of stitch pattern and project structure, gauge, needle selection, and care/cleaning of your knitted projects. All this information will help you find the most suitable yarns for making the most suitable projects.
Dyeing and Stamping with Natural Dyes

Learn to create yellow and red dye baths using wild-crafted and locally grown dye plants!
Dye fabric swatches in these natural dyes, then receive a lesson in surface design - create your own stamp and print on your dyed fabric using thickened natural dyes. Learn how and why to use mordants and a variety of dye plants that can be used to achieve fantastic color. This class will include instructions for overdyeing to create secondary colors.
**Recommendation: Sign up for the Indigo class on Saturday so you can overdye your blue fabric in the red or yellow natural dye baths.**

Tina Bury
I am lifelong maker, from fiber to wood, I love working with natural materials to create things of beauty and utility. 10 years ago, I taught myself to sew clothing and fell in love. In the present day I make most of my own clothes, drafting many of the patterns from scratch and have just begun to learn the art of knitting!
Creating is an empowering act, it allows you to take back your body, your style, your home and where you spend your money. It also allows us to connect with our heritage, connect to ourselves and to our community and to connect to future generations in the form of heirloom pieces. Handwork carries your story and your love. It is all of this magic that I want to share with folks. I teach so that I can connect and share with others.
Tracie Herkner
It's Sew Ewe!
I practice the entire process of "Farm to Fashion," and have been doing so for many years. From raising fiber critters in my backyard, to shearing alpaca and sheep, skirting, washing, carding or combing, spinning from a fleece/roving/top, knitting/crocheting/weaving a finished piece.
I have been spinning on a wheel for close to 30 years, knitting and sewing for over 40 years, and weaving for about 20. I love to teach and inspire people to try the fiber arts and succeed.

Marcia is a fiber artist living in Petoskey, MI. She is a proud grandmother and enjoys spending time in the outdoors.

My husband and I have owned a local restaurant in Glen Arbor, Michigan since 1983. Cooking has been an occupation and a passion of mine since childhood.
I have always been active in some type of art form and I have found that felting has blended my love of art with my love of fiber. I find painting and creating with fiber is a never ending journey of discovery with the many different types of fiber and opportunities to use them in a varied number of ways.
Personally I have taken a number of classes over the years - and continue to take them. I find that you don't know what you don't know until you know it. The learning curve is unlimited and sharing those ideas is a great way to increase my desire to constantly find other ways to pursue my passion.

Shanna Robinson
Horton Bay Naturals
Shanna Robinson has been making art from whatever material expresses her purpose for more than 30 years. Working in textiles, ceramics, sculpture and printmaking, she creates a varied body of work connected by a love of the natural world. Robinson is Professor of Art at North Central Michigan College, where she teaches ceramics, textiles and design.
Dawn Swaim
Dawn is a painter and fiber artist living in Boyne City, Michigan. Currently she teaches Oil Painting (with water mixable oils) at North Central Michigan College.
Amy Tyler
Stone Sock Fibers
Amy has formal training in modern dance, kinesiology, and physiology. She spent years teaching physical therapy students about critical inquiry, evidence-based practice, and research design. About 15 years ago she left the academic life to pursue fibers arts. Now she teaches spinning and knitting at venues across the country and is well known for her animated and engaging teaching style. She has published articles in Spin-Off and PLY Magazine. Her art and science backgrounds give her a keen understanding of learning movement skills, composition, pattern recognition, and systematic exploration. The result is her focus on spinning and knitting technique, texture, three-dimensional structure, and knit designs that exploit handspinning techniques.
