"From Out of the Storm" Cantors Respond to Devastation of Hurricanes Irma, Jose and Maria
Join us for a benefit concert for the Jewish communities of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands who were victims of Hurricanes Irma, Jose and Maria.  A sparkling lineup from the New England Board of Cantors joins forces with Reb Moshe Waldoks of Temple Beth Zion of Brookline and the Boston Simchatics, its klezmer band, to bring you an afternoon of beautiful song and heartfelt reflection. Come prepared to have your ears delighted and your heart opened, as we raise funds for our neighbors affected by the dreadful hurricanes of 2017.

Performers include Cantors: Marilyn Becker, Vera Broekhuysen, Shoshana Brown, Sheila Cline, Idan Irelander, Lisa Kipen-Hershenson, Jeff Klepper, Michael McCloskey, Jeri Nagler Robins, Elias Rosemberg, Elana Rozenfeld, Nancy Sargon, Sarra Spierer, Louise Treitman, and Pharrel Wener. Collaborative pianist is David Sparr.  From the Boston Simchatics: Michael Hecht, clarinet;  Aviva Selling, violin; Dan Kirschner, violin, Lillian Sober Ain, percussion.

Suggested donation is $20.00 General Admission and $12.00 for students and seniors.   Proceeds will be donated to the Jewish Federations of North America Hurricane Relief Fund and the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands.

PERFORMERS:

CANTOR MARILYN BECKER is Spiritual Leader and founder of Life Cycle Outreach, an organization that provides the service of clergy to families in celebration and observance of Life Cycle events such as Baby Naming, Bar and Bat Mitzvah, Marriage, Anniversary Renewal of Vows, and End of Life Memorial and Funeral services. For fifteen years, Hazzan Becker served as Cantor at Temple Adas Hadrath Israel in Hyde Park and at Temple Emanuel in Haverhill, Massachusetts. She has also performed Healing and Renewal Services at Hebrew Senior Life in Roslindale and at Newbridge Senior Living in  Dedham, Massachusetts.

Cantor Becker is a fully commissioned member of the Cantors Assembly, the largest organization of professional cantors worldwide.  She served as Secretary to the Jewish Ministers and Cantors Association of New England.  In addition to her NEBC membership, Cantor Becker is a member of the Women Cantors Network.  She is a classically trained singer and has concertized extensively in the New England area.
 
CANTOR VERA BROEKHUYSEN serves as Cantor at Temple Emanu-El of Haverhill, MA. A proud member of the Zamir Chorale of Boston, she was ordained at Hebrew College in 2016. Cantor Broekhuysen's cantorial passions include interfaith explorations and relationship-building, immigration justice, and bringing the experience of sacred drumming into t'fillah (prayer) and educational space. Cantor Broekhuysen is the Secretary of the New England Board of Cantors (NEBC). She lives with her husband and two sons in North Andover, MA.

CANTOR SHOSHANA BROWN  serves Temple Beth El of Fall River as cantor and co-spiritual leader (with her husband, Rabbi Mark Elber); she also enjoys photography, and writes articles on hiking around the MA and RI area in the Fall River Herald News, and enjoys taking congregants on area hikes.

CANTOR SHEILA CLINE is a trail-blazer.  She is one of the first two women to be ordained as a cantor.  Awarded the first ever full cantorial scholarship at the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, she was also the first female cantor to be invited to sing in Israel and Europe.  As founder of  LIFESONGS, Cantor Cline has pioneered in using music as a nurturing, renewing, and healing medium creating empowering programs of music and message for congregations, community and interfaith outreach, educational conferences, and health care institutions.  Boston born, she was the recipient of the Massachusetts Artist's Award in Voice, a National Scholar in the Creative Arts at Brandeis University, and a leading soprano with the Music Drama Theatre of New York, a Jewish opera company.  Cantor Cline has appeared on radio, television, and in the print media. She is a member of the Synagogue Council Advisory Board, the Jewish Community Relations Council, and the American Conference of Cantors.

CANTOR IDAN IRELANDER is the Cantor and Music Director at Temple Emanuel in Andover, MA, and the current NEBC President.  Cantor Irelanders love for music brought him from his native Israel to Berklee College of Music in Boston, and later to Hebrew College where he received his ordination. He is the creator of the Shabbat Olam series, Shabbat Around the World and the Sephardic Shabbat Unplugged, a unique Shabbat experience with unique musicians from Jordan, Syria, Iran, America and Israel.

CANTOR LISA KIPEN-HERSHENSON. When she's not davening at Newbridge on the Charles or having fun learning about Jewish journeys around the world (with second & third graders) at TBZ, Cantor Lisa Kipen-Hershenson can be found singing at Jewish life cycle events or with Koleinu, Boston's Jewish Community Chorus.

CANTOR JEFF KLEPPER (HUC-JIR) has served congregations in New York, Haifa, and Chicago, and has performed in the group Kol B'Seder (with Rabbi Dan Freelander) for over four decades. He is co-founder (with the late Debbie Friedman) of the annual Hava Nashira Song Leader Workshop. Since 2003 he has been cantor of Temple Sinai of Sharon, and a member of the faculty of the School of Jewish Music at Hebrew College.

CANTOR MICHAEL McCLOSKEY is the Chazzan-M'chanech (Cantor-Educator) at Temple Emeth in Brookline and is also a faculty coach at Hebrew College in Newton, MA. Cantor McCloskey is also an accomplished pianist, having accompanied groups at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. In his spare time he enjoys composing, bicycling, and exploring the beauty of New England with his wife Ray and little ones Leonardo and Ramona.

CANTOR JERI NAGLER ROBINS serves as the Director of BJEP, the Boston-area Jewish Education Program, an independent Sunday school held on the Brandeis campus. In addition, she teaches 6th Grade at Temple Beth Zion and 2nd grade at Temple Ohabei Shalom; tutors private Bnei Mitzvah students and officiates at life cycle events; and leads Shabbat services at Congregation Mishkan Tefila. Previously, she was the Cantor at Congregation Beth Israel in Worcester and the Cantor and Director of Education at Temple Beth Shalom in Peabody. She received her Cantorial Ordination and Masters degree in Jewish Education from Hebrew College in June, 2013. She is the current NEBC Vice President.  Cantor Robins  lives in Newton with her husband, Steve, and has two grown children.

CANTOR ELIAS ROSEMBERG is Cantor at Temple Emanuel of Newton, a position that hes held for almost ten years.  He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to a family of musicians. His grandfather was a Hazzan and his father was a clarinetist in a Klezmer band. At the age of 18 he started work as a Hazzan.  He went on to study at Seminario Rabínico Latinoamericano where he obtained the degree of Hazzan and Singing Professor.  Additionally, he completed a five year program in Pathology, Audiology & Speech therapy at the School of Medicine, University of Buenos Aires. In Argentina, Cantor Rosemberg performed at many concerts, officiated at many weddings, appeared on TV and radio programs, was featured on several recordings, and won the vocal contest: Argentina sings for Israel organized by the Israeli Embassy in Argentina. In July of 2000 he moved to the United States.  He has served congregations in Morris Plains, New Jersey, and Chestnut Hill, MA.
 
Cantor Rosemberg enhances synagogue life at Temple Emanuel not only as a Hazzan, but also with wonderful musical programs and concerts.  He continues to receive honors and recognition for his talent as a great singer and as a gifted Hazzan. His repertoire includes Cantorial, Israeli, Yiddish, and Ladino, as well as Opera and Broadway selections. True to his Argentinean roots, he also enjoys singing Tango.
 
CANTOR ELANA ROZENFELD. A graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts in Theatre, Cantor Elana Rozenfeld entered into the Jewish Theological Seminary's H. L. Miller Cantorial School.  Upon graduating in 2009, she married her beloved Raphael, and joined the clergy team at Park Avenue Synagogue for two years.  She is currently in her seventh year at Congregation Shirat Hayam in Swampscott, MA.  This summer, Cantor Rozenfeld will begin a brand new adventure as stay-at-home mom to their two kids: Ariel (5) and Carmel (2.5), and as freelance cantor, educator and performer.  

CANTOR NANCY SARGON is a member of the Spiritual Care Department at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, where she serves as an interfaith chaplain, addressing the needs of patients, families and staff. She teaches b'nei mitzvah students privately and at Temple Beth Elohim in Wellesley, and also officiates at life-cycle events.  Cantor Sargon received her Cantorial ordination from Hebrew College. She is a long-time member of the Zamir Chorale of Boston, a member of the Cantors Assembly and the current NEBC Treasurer. She lives in Newton with her husband Norman and dog Nikki.

CANTOR SARRA SPIERER has served as the Cantor at Congregation Beth Elohim in Acton, MA, since 2007.  A member of the first class of graduates from Hebrew Colleges Cantor Educator Program, she is passionate about interfaith learning, and meditation as a form of healing. She also sang with the Zamir Chorale of Boston, where she was inspired by fellow singers who later became her teachers and colleagues.   She is a member of the Cantors Assembly and a longtime voice student of Raisa Shapiro (who has also performed at TBZ). She lives with her wonderful husband, Elan Riesman, in Acton.

CANTOR LOUISE TREITMAN. After twenty years at Temple Beth David in Westwood, Cantor Louise Treitman currently serves at Beth El Temple Center in Belmont. She is on the faculty at Hebrew College where she teaches cantorial, rabbinic and education students. She has been singing with the Zamir Chorale of Boston, oftentimes a soloist, for many years.  Cantor Treitman is also the founding co-director of Il Concerto di Salamone Rossi Hebreo and has also been the High Holy Day Spiritual Leader at Shir Hadash Firenze in Florence, Italy for several years.

CANTOR PHARREL WENER is a member of the Cantors Assembly and has held cantorial positions in this country and in his native South Africa. He has concertized regularly,performed in opera and musicals, and has appeared on television, radio and in a movie. His repertoire includes  Jewish music, English and American Art Song, and German Lieder. He lives in Gloucester and is a freelance cantor.

RABBI MOSHE WALDOKS is the Senior Rabbi and ba'al tefila at Temple Beth Zion, an independent synagogue in Brookline, Massachusetts.

DAVID SPARR-PIANIST.  David Sparr is Music Director at Temple Ohabei Shalom in Brookline and has held this position since 2000. Last month, in honor of his 18th year there, he created a Reggae Shabbat service. He regularly works with many of the areas Cantors, including the Four Argen-tenors (featuring Elias Rosemberg), and Elana Rozenfeld at Congregation Shirat Hayam. David has an active free-lance career and has performed with such diverse company as Sarah Caldwells Opera Company of Boston, Broadway stars Joel Grey and Linda Hopkins, the Zamir Chorale of Boston, and numerous independent bands. He was the  Musical Director of the New Repertory Theaters production of the Robert Brustein/Hankus Netsky musical The King of Second Avenue (for which he won the Independent Reviewers of New England Best Music Direction award), and has transcribed and edited Ruach Hadarom, a recently published anthology of Jewish music from Latin America. He owns and operates Little Dog Studios in Malden, MA, where he has the great privilege of accompanying and recording many of New Englands elite performers. He is fortunate to live by the ocean in Nahant, MA with his sparkling wife, Jamie Leader.
