Spoken word jazz ensemble COPUS live at The Bindery
Formed by renowned poet Royal Kent and ASCAP Award-winning composer Wendy Loomis, COPUS is a spoken word jazz ensemble that presents conscious lyrics intertwined with beautiful melodies and powerful rhythms.
COPUS an acronym for Creation Of Peace Under Stars has a faithful following by discerning listeners. A wide variety of talented musicians have performed with COPUS; the current instrumentation includes bass (Patrick Mahon), singing (Melissa Finder & Ann Souren), drums (Levon Washington), spoken word (Royal Kent) and piano (Wendy Loomis). COPUS has performed in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Nashville, Atlanta, and Boston. In 2018 COPUS will be performing in New York for January GRAMMY weekend and are scheduled for the SF Jazz Center in the spring.
COPUS recently released the single We All Bleed Red (Steady for Justice). Produced by New York-based GRAMMY nominee Yaron Fuchs, the piece has been receiving great reviewsan anthem for our time. "Through ace musicianship and a wild, bright & bold sound, COPUS captures the magic theyre seeking to create on We All Bleed Red its like a combination of Quincy Jones meets Baz Luhrmann theatrical & dramatic in nature with great storytelling, set in an old-school setting that incorporates modern-day movement in the structure and reflecting on the current state of the world lyrically. The song is being considered for best rap song by the GRAMMY voters for 2018.
