The 19th Annual Concert for Peace
19th Annual Concert for Peace:
A Centennial Celebration of Lou Harrison

A holiday celebration of the life and works of an American legend known for marrying Eastern and Western musical traditions, performed in partnership with Chicago Balinese Gamelan

In celebration of the holiday season, Fulcrum Point New Music Project will partner with Chicago Balinese Gamelan to honor American iconoclast composer, Lou Harrison and perform his most beloved works. Composer, environmentalist and gay activist, Lou Harrison (1917  2003) is best known for blazing new paths in music by invigorating the Western canon with musical influences from all over the world, creating his own musical instruments, and experimenting with microtones. With superb craftsmanship he combined a reverence for world cultures, a passionate belief in social equity and a love of melody and beauty in all its forms, to create his own musical revolution.

Harrison was heavily influenced by gamelan music; The orchestra of gongs, metallophones, drums and bamboo flutes that make up Indonesian gamelan music has inspired and influenced composers worldwide for its stunning sounds and vivacious rhythms. Gamelan music is used in Bali, Indonesia as a method of religious worship, celebration and offering to the many Balinese Hindu gods and goddesses. In addition to the gamelan music, the concert will include a performance of traditional Balinese dance.

Since Fulcrum Points inception, the Annual Concert for Peace has been our holiday concert, celebrating societal good will to all and the shared virtues of kindness, compassion, generosity, joy, and peace. The concert shines a spotlight on humanitys struggles and achievements in the order to inspire acceptance, inclusion, and love through music. This will be our 19th Concert for Peace, marking 2018 as our 20th anniversary serving Chicago as a platform for new art music.

The Program:
Solstice
Varied Trio
Songs of the Forest
