Budgeting Your Art
When applying for grant funding, or even just trying to make a budget for an artistic project, how do you predict what you need? How much should you get paid? How much can you promise to collaborators? What about supplies and space and snacks and everything else? This workshop will help you better understand artistic dollars - what you need them for, what you may not realize you could use them for, and how to calculate and estimate and cover all the bases. We will examine several small-project artistic budgets (from $1,000-$10,000), as well as tips and tricks for maximizing every penny.

This workshop is the third of five that will be held throughout November and December, 2017. The series is a collaboration between Patrick's Cabaret, Soo Visual Arts Center, and Pangea World Theater. This program is intended to create collaborative space for artists to share their skills with fellow artists and organizers, to strengthen relationships and build resilience, and to provide opportunities for artists to put their knowledges to work.

Please register in advance (although you're welcome to show up day-of). We ask a $5-10 sliding scale, but have full subsidies available if you need. Snacks and other refreshments will be available.

This workshop is designed and led by Claire Avitabile. A 2005 Minnesota transplant from New England, Claire Avitabile has been directing and producing theatre, and curating performance events for over 15 years. In 2006 she founded 20% Theatre Company with three goals in mind: 1) to produce and present high quality, professional theatre that empowers LGBTQ and allied artists and inspires social change; 2) to employ and mentor emerging LGBTQ and allied artists; and 3) to always compensate artists for their work. 20% Theatre just started its 12thseason, and has so far produced over 35 plays and events, including world and regional premieres, sold-out performances, festivals, and productions that have gone on to tour locally and nationally. Claire has been a guest speaker/presenter at the University of Minnesota, St. Catherine University, Smith College, St. Marys University, the Minnesota Transgender Health Coalition Conference, Wisdom Ways Center for Spirituality, the Transcending Boundaries Conference, MPR, and the Gender Odyssey Conference in Seattle, WA. She was recognized by Lavender Magazine as a Top GLBT Leader in the Twin Cities (2012) and as Artistic Director of the Year (2014), and received the Women of Distinction prize from Century College (2012).
