2018 ABWA Career Chapter Woman of Distinction Scholarship Luncheon honoring Karren Weichert
This event, held annually since 1983, honors a woman of distinction and raises scholarship funds in her name. Proceeds from the event support college students pursuing degrees at Washburn University of Topeka and the Washburn Institute of Technology. Through the years, the luncheon has funded nearly $350,000 in scholarships.

Our honoree for 2018 is Karren Weichert.

Karren Weichert is President and CEO of Midland Care Connection, Inc, a not-for-profit provider of health services.  She has been with the organization for 27 years.  Beginning as a board member in 1988 and hired as the Executive Director in 1990 for Midlands hospice program, she has led Midland through the development of a continuum of services that includes adult day care, home health and home support, hospice, PACE  (Program of All Inclusive Care for the Elderly), palliative care and grief services.  With locations in five communities, Midland Care is today a leading provider of care in eastern Kansas in large part due to Karrens leadership.

She has served two terms as a director on the board of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO), served on various committees, and chaired the NHPCO Standards and Quality Committee. She is very involved with the National PACE Association and currently serving a third term on the Board of Directors. She is a member of the Public Policy committees for both national organizations.  A few years ago Karren was honored to testify on behalf of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization before the US Senate Special Committee on Aging regarding care of individuals with complex chronic healthcare needs.

Karren is a frequent presenter at NHPCO, Leading Age, and PACE conferences on program diversification, innovations in healthcare and leadership in todays rapidly changing world.  Additionally, she is a member of an elite group of hospice directors in the National Hospice Executive Roundtable.  This think tank of leaders share best practices focusing on changing healthcare dynamics and strategies for the future.   As a leader in end-of-life care for almost three decades, Karren has been a mentor, a teacher, and a leader in hospice and palliative care and for the past decade, in senior services.

On a local level, she serves on several boards and committees and is a member of Topeka Rotary.

Karren is originally from Kentucky. She grew up in an air force family and lived in several different places as a child.  Her family moved to Topeka and settled here in the late 60s where Karren attended Washburn Rural High School.  She and her husband, Ivan, have three children and 12 grandchildren.
