Celebrating Mobile's Hidden Figures
Join us for the reception and unveiling of the historic marker for "Say Their Names: A Celebration of Mobile's Hidden Figures." This marker and public mural, created by artist Rando Dixon, celebrates the achievements of Mobilians Dr. Regina Benjamin, Major General Gary Cooper, and Lonnie Johnson.

Suggested donation is $25 and includes light hor d'oeuvres, wine, and beer. The honorees will be present for a special unveiling and presentation. Tickets can be purchased online or in-person at the Mobile Arts Council offices.

"Say Their Names: A Celebration of Mobile's Hidden Figures" is a project of the 2017 Leadership Mobile Diversity and Inclusion Team. It is sponsored by the Dora Franklin Finley African-American Heritage Trail of Mobile and Mobile Arts Council.

Dr. Regina Marcia Benjamin served as the 18th U.S. Surgeon General, vice admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and is the founder and CEO of the Bayou La Batre Rural Health Clinic in Alabama. Pope Benedict XVI awarded her the papal cross as Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice (For Church and Pope) - the highest medal that can be awarded to the laity. She also received the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights and is a MacArthur Fellow.

Major General J. Gary Cooper, during the Vietnam War, was the first African-American to ever command a Marine Corps infantry company. In 1973, he was elected to the Alabama Legislature. By 1989, President Bush nominated him to be Assistant Secretary of the Air Force. In 1994, President Clinton named him the U.S. Ambassador to Jamaica. After 3 years, he returned to his home in Mobile and became CEO of Commonwealth National Bank.

Lonnie George Johnson is a nuclear engineer who joined the U.S. Air Force and worked on the stealth bomber program. Later, at NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, he worked with the nuclear power source for the Galileo mission to Jupiter, Johnson holds numerous patents and invented the SuperSoaker water gun, which as been ranked among the world's top 20 best-selling toys.
