Baldwin School's Much Ado About Nothing
Sigh No More, Ladies: The Baldwin Upper School Maskers Club Presents Much Ado About Nothing
The Baldwin School's Upper School Maskers Club is producing William Shakespeares timeless comedy, Much Ado About Nothing on Friday, November 10 at 7PM, Saturday, November 11 at noon and 7PM, and Sunday, November 12 at 1PM Tickets are now on sale by visiting the club's website at www.maskers.club. The whimsical and romantic comedy tells the tale of veteran soldiers, Don Pedro (Sophomore, Jattu Fahnbulleh), Claudio (Devon local home schooler David Zachai), and Benedick (Lionel McCulloch of the Pennsylvania Leadership Charter School) as they return from a family skirmish and make a short celebratory stopover with long time friend, and governor of the province of Messina, Leonato (Senior Emily Thompson). Don Pedro's brother, Don John (Junior, Ashley Tate) has rebelled against the family and tradition, and the rebellion has been put down by the heroic team of friends. Though Don John has been forgiven, revenge is still in the air as he fumes over the loss in status.
So, while Claudio reunites with his crush, Leonato's daughter Hero (Sophomore, Kit Conklin), and Benedick continues his long standing intellectual feud with Beatrice (Senior, Melia Hagino), humor abounds over miscommunication, as the friends try to dupe Benedick and Beatrice into falling in love! Don John is the only one not amused, as he plots vengeance against them all.
Will the confused and confusing neighborhood watch, headed by Dogberry (Senior, Alexis McCall) and Verges (Sophomore, Amanda Miller) sort everything out before comedy turns to tragedy? Hopefully threats and apparent deaths are all just Much Ado About Nothing.
Much Ado About Nothing is appropriate and fun for all ages with a colorful musical score of old standards and original treats, costumes that span the centuries, and a jazzy devil may care exploration of communication's confusing social mores. To delve into the timelessness of comedy and tragedy, the production team explores Shakespeare with an eye towards many trends that have stood the test of time. Even those who are not familiar with the play or Shakespeare's language will be enchanted by the colorful and comedic story, directed by award winning director and Baldwin drama teacher, Aileen McCulloch, who brings a physical story telling to the verbal acuity of the Bard's poetic language to help the novice Shakespeare lover a ring side seed to the imagination and intrigue of the play.
Co-head of Maskers, Senior Katie Mostek, who plays Borachio in the production notes, "Maskers is so thrilled to be putting on Shakespeare again. We look forward to a strong start to the school year with a group of dedicated students working on crew and onstage." Featuring many members of the club's Cappies Award winning production of 12 Angry Jurors, the company is excited to be starting with a strong ensemble already in place. The cast also features Alice Bu as the Sexton, Aya Ibikunle as the Messenger and a boy, Tiernan McCulloch as Conrade, Esther Moola, Kate Park, Emily Seltzer, Audrey Senior as Margaret, Abby Shen as Ursula and George Seacole, Layla Siahatgar as the Friar, and Esther Moola, Cartier Thomas, Bella Xia, and Blanche Jiang as the "watch." Ashley Tate (Don John) also joins the watch when Don John disappears in the second half of the play.
Senior Julia Maenza is Production Stage Manager, with Freshman Lucy Bonin as Assistant Stage Manager. Alyssa Morales is set designer, bringing a lyrical jazzy setting to life with grass and blooming flowers. The production team consists of Isabella Aldrete, Sanae Hagino, Ava Olson, Becky Resnick (lighting design), Anjali Sukhavasi (choreography) and Skylar Zachian (costumes). Several members of the acting company are also working on production elements including Alexis McCall (costumes) and Audrey Senior (public relations and choreography).
