KEXP and Giordano Productions are thrilled to present Brazilian 7-string guitar virtuoso Yamandu Costa to Seattle for one night only at the historic Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute on Friday, October 20 at 8:00pm.
A brilliant guitar player, composer, and arranger, Yamandus impressive and explosive live performance highlights a deep intimacy with the guitar switching between samba, choro, and tango with blistering dexterity.
Brazilian guitarist Yamandú Costa attacks the nylon strings of his guitar with a demonic playfulness. The fingers of his left-hand trace lightning riffs, pausing briefly to block out full chords as they range up and down the neck with effortless zeal. His body tenses with a kind of exhilaration. His head tilts back, then sideways; his eyes close, then open, wide as moons; his legs cross and uncross, then stretch out before himas though he and his instrument were both being played by some virtuosic sprite, and he were merely an amazed observer. The music is as technical as the most challenging classical repertoire, but the rhythms bounce and glide along with the vigor of dance grooves from some charmed, imaginary land. The Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute focuses on African American performing arts and cultural legacies, but also on creating connections with diverse cultures in the community. From the beautiful façade of the building outside to the cozy atmosphere of the auditorium, the 285 black-plum velvet seat theater boasts beautiful acoustical sound.
