Resonance @ First Church Berkeley: Mya Byrne
Recently relocated to San Francisco by way of NYC, Mya Byrne is a poet, award-winning performer, songwriter, and activist. She established her solo folk-Americana career in 2012 after years of performing with roots-rock band, the Ramblers. She has been honored to open for some of her heroes, including Levon Helm, Steve Forbert, and Rae Spoon, and featured on John Platt's On Your Radar (WFUV-FM, NYC).

Myas played many great festival and club stages across the country. Her first solo record hit #31 on the roots charts, and her follow-up, As I Am, is out now. She was a 2015 Emerging Artist at the legendary Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, performed at the Philadelphia Folk Fest in 2016, and was a 2013-2015 Folk Alliance showcase artist. She's also a first-place award winner in the 2015 Great American Songwriting Contest (Americana category).

Her music, poetry, and opinions have also been featured in such media as SingOut!, The Advocate, Village Voice, New York Magazine, MSNBC, ABC, NPR/PRI, People, Huffington Post, Time Out, and CBS/Radio.com, with public speaking engagements at institutions including SUNY, UC Berkeley, and the UU.

Mya was recently featured on a Grateful Dead tribute album to benefit the Rex Foundation, the Dead's charitable organization, She is a founding member of the Bay Area Trans Writers Workshop, and was most recently published in The James Franco Review. Her poetry was also chosen for an upcoming anthology, Trans Women Across Genres, curated by Lambda Literary award-winning poet and Yale professor Trace Peterson.

First Church Berkeley, a premier venue for music performance in the East Bay, has created its own exciting series of chamber and orchestral music concerts featuring artists from the Bay Area and beyond.

Music has always been an important part of the life of First Church. It touches the soul and gives sound and voice to ineffable mystery. We sing together and share our musical gifts. We also delight in the special talents of artists from within our community and beyond.

Derek Tam, First Church's Director of Music, curates this exciting series.

First Church is on the south side of the UC Berkeley campus, just west of Telegraph Avenue. It is a few blocks from the Downtown Berkeley BART and is accessible by several bus lines. Some paid parking is available in the church parking lot.
