ICA and Together Boston DJ Classes: Session 4
The Institute of Contemporary Art in conjunction with Together Boston is excited to offer four, 3 hour DJ Classes aimed at the interested beginner on Saturday and Sunday, February 13th and 14th.
Jamie Michalski (DJ Die Young) and Ryan Sciaino (Ghostdad) will be leading classes that cover the basics of DJing, including how to set up equipment, basic cueing and scratching, beat matching and party rocking. The class will include discussion on the history of DJing, how it has changed over the years and instruction on how to use Serato, the DJing software which has become the dominant choice for club DJs over the past 3 years. We aim to get students started understanding what makes a good DJ, how to play out in public and how to take DJing out of the bedroom. The classes will be hands-on as the ICA has been generous enough to provide six DJ setups as well as one high-end demo station to all comers.
A little about the instructors:
Ryan Sciaino (Ghostdad) is a DJ and video artist who plays various venues in Boston and New York. When he's not in front of turntables, he works with the visual programing environment Max/MSP to create unique audio and video applications for live performance. In the past year he has taught classes in DJing and live video at the ICA in Boston. He also produces sound and visuals as part of the Fully Fitted collective (http://fullyfitted.com).
Jamie Michalski (DJ Die Young), who started DJing high school dances in the 90s, has been DJing for 10 years. He is a resident of Make it New at the Middlesex Lounge, Good News! At the Enormous Room and Visions at Great Scott. He has sat in as a guest teacher with Ryan during last year's DJ classes at the ICA. Jamie is on the Boston music label Dopamine Records (www.dopamine-records.com).
NOTE: There are only 12 slots per class, so please register as soon as possible as this class is first come, first serve.
NOTE: This event is for ages 21 and under. Please show up to your class 10 minutes early.
