The Tuning Project
Directed by internationally celebrated dancer-choreographer Karen Nelson, The Tuning Project is a landing point for personal dancing histories in collaborative performance and brings together an exceptional group of artists for the first time, including dancers Kirstan Clifford, Elaine Dove, Silva Laukkanen, Susan Prins, Lauren Tietz, Kirsche Dickson, Julie Nathanielsz and Nelson, lighting designer Natalie George, and multi-instrumentalist Henna Chou.

At times amplifying while at other times unraveling human behavior, The Tuning Project considers ideas and movement possibilities normally left out of the frame. It is a study of the images we build within the body, as we imbue space with the rhythm, cadence and color of those images.  The Tuning Project is a performance of observation, feeling, choice, and resonance in context.

Karen Nelson has danced, toured, taught and performed worldwide since 1976, also collaborating with many leading artists in the field of dance. Her work with long-time collaborator Steve Paxton and his system Material for the Spine has had a tremendous influence on her work in improvisation. Throughout the 1990s, Nelson was a member of the ensemble of choreographer/improvisors Image Lab in collaboration with dance visionary Lisa Nelson, where Tuning Scores were first explored and practiced.
