Garage: A Rock Saga
Y Arts Detroit, in partnership with The Man in the City Project, screens locally produced or locally themed films every month to raise much needed funds to support arts programs for area youth and families. November features the cult classic "Garage: A Rock Saga" which was not only shot in the Detroit area, but features a plethora of talented Detroit actors and musicians along with some notable cameos.
Produced by Planet Ant Productions and based on the stage play of the same name, "Garage" follows a four-member rock band formed following the death of band founder Frank's father. Catching up with the band every five years - as they assume a different musical trend from 70s disco to 90s grunge- the band goes through highs and lows as members come and go, each struggling to find their individual identity, and their identity as a rock band.
The film features now defunct local group "Park: A Rock Band" founded by Second City Detroit alumni Joshua Funk and Chad Krueger during their time with the famous comedy theatre. Many other notable Second City alumni appear throughout the film including: George Wendt, John Farley, Kevin Farley, Keegan Michael Key, Marc Evan Jackson, Nyima Funk, and Executive Director of Y Arts Detroit Margaret Edwartowski.
Each of this series' screenings allows the audience a chance to see into the creative process behind the making of each film. Garage's Director Mikey Brown and Director of Photography/Co-Director Kevin Leeser will host a Q & A following the screening.
All proceeds from The Man in the City Film Series screenings go to help Y Arts Detroit provide quality arts programs that serve Metro Detroit youth and families.
