Northwest Symphony Orchestra - Passages
Elgar's Sea Pictures captures the words of five Victorian poets as they present dramatic inner dialogues. The work evokes the power and beauty of the sea, from coral reefs to stormy shipwrecks. Alongside the sea's ever-changing character, we recognize our personal passages in life. The rich, dark voice of contralto Elizabeth Hale Knox guides our passage into this rarely-heard work.
The Serenade of Brahms is an artistic passage of sorts. This youthful work comes from a time when Brahms had yet to commit to the word "symphony". In this six-movement piece, we hear the classic Brahms style, though still infused with an exploration of sounds, instrumentation, and harmonic developments. The work bursts with great themes for the woodwind and horn players in true Brahms fashion.
