And All That Jazz!
The May concert is our Side-by-Side concert with the local youth orchestra. The most talented members of the HYO (Harford Youth Orchestra), music director Brian Folus, will join the SSO for most of this concert. It is always a treat to share the stage with up-and-coming young artists.
The concert gets off to a lively start with Sir Malcolm Arnold's very popular (and rambunctious) Four Scottish Dances. The SSO has performed many works by this English Composer but not this, perhaps his most popular work for concert orchestra! The Arnold work will be followed by Vaughan Williams Fanstasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis for three string groups. This is an absolutely beautiful piece and a number of the SSO members have asked that we repeat it for this season (we had performed it years ago with the Edinburgh String Quartet).
Next we move on to Arturo Marquez Danzon #2 which has become an often-played work by orchestras in the Americas. It is full of life and so much fun! A crowd pleaser to be sure!
Our friend, violinist Roy Sonne (retired from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra), brought the very jazzy Concerto for Jazz Violin and Orchestra to the Maestro's attention about one year ago. Its composer is Scott Routenberg who teaches composition at Ball State University in Indiana. This is another great audience and orchestra pleaser that everyone is sure to enjoy!
On the tails of this Concerto the SSO will end its season with Copland's always-popular Hoe Down from "Rodeo". Yipee ki yay!
