Christmas in Leipzig
Journey back in time with us at we join with The Bach Festival of Philadelphia's Bach Collegium Orchestra to recreate the sounds of an eighteenth century Lutheran Vespers service from Leipzig. Johann Sebastian Bach's Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (BWV 147) was composed in 1716 for the fourth Sunday of Advent. The chorale texts incorporate the New Testament story of Marys visit to her cousin Elizabeth, who praises Marys pregnancy with Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. Mary replies with the famous Magnificat. Rounding out this program will be Meine Seel erhebt den Herren (BWV 10) also composed (in 1724) for the Feast of the Visitation, taking its text from the first chapter of Luke.
