RAGTIME: The Musical - In Concert at Costa Mesa Playhouse
As its annual fundraising event, The Costa Mesa Playhouse is launching its 50th season with a concert production of the Tony-Award-winning musical "Ragtime," with three performances only, August 8, 9 & 10, 2014.
Set in the volatile melting pot of New York at the turn of the 20th century, "Ragtime" weaves together three distinctly American tales -- that of a stifled upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant and a daring young Harlem musician -- united by their courage, compassion and belief in the promise of the American dream.
Based on E.L. Doctorow's distinguished novel, with noted playwright Terence McNally ("Kiss of the Spider Woman") writing the book, "Ragtime"'s Tony-winning score by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty ("Once On This Island," "Seussical") draws on musical styles from the ragtime rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley to the klezmer of the Lower East Side, from up-tempo banjo tunes to period parlor songs and expansive anthems.
"Ragtime" is directed by Jason Holland with musical direction by Stephen Hulsey, the same team who staged the sellout fundraiser productions of "Titanic" and "Sweeney Todd." The cast will feature over 30 singers and actors who will perform the entire play script in hand.
The Saturday, August 18 performance includes a catered reception and silent auction.
