Miss Hardcastle is a charming young lady of noble birth living out in the country with her parents and her mischievous half-brother Tony Lumpkin. When her father arranges for a potential suitor, Mr. Marlow, to travel from London to court her, she discovers that he's so nervous around noble women that he can't even look her in the eye. What's more, her brother Tony has tricked young Mr. Marlow into believing that her father's house is a country inn instead of his house.

Miss Hardcastle resolves to play on Mr. Marlow's mistake by pretending to be the barmaid of the "inn," tricking him into courting her with more confidence. Will she be able to seal the deal before her father angrily kicks Mr. Marlow out of the house?

Meanwhile, Miss Hardcastle's cousin, Miss Neville has romantic problems of her own. Mrs. Hardcastle, her guardian and aunt, wants her to marry Tony Lumpkin (who would rather die than marry Miss Neville). Miss Neville has her heart set on running off with the dashing Mr. Hastings. It will take all of Miss Neville's and Tony Lumpkin's wit to trick Mrs. Hardcastle and free themselves to marry whom they'd like!
