The Baroque Saxophone
Concert 1 of Colin MacDonald's Summer Saxophone Series, The Baroque Saxophone, presents arrangements of baroque favourites for baritone and soprano saxophones. Colin is joined by baroque music specialists Christina Hutten on harpsichord, and Marina Hasselberg on cello. This program re-imagines baroque music as though the saxophone had been invented in the 17th Century.  Included works are Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto in Em, RV 484; J.S. Bach's well-loved Suite V, BVW 1011, arranged for baritone saxophone; George Handel's Trio Sonata in Gm, op. 2 no. 8, KWV 393, for baritone saxophone and cello; and Colin MacDonald's Folie à Deux, variations on the renaissance melody La Folìa.

Colin MacDonald is a freelance saxophonist, composer and arranger living in Vancouver. He has studied jazz arranging with Fred Stride, world rhythms with Glen Velez and Trichy Sankaran, and Balinese gamelan with Michael Tenzer and Dewa Ketut Alit.  His works have been premiered by the Turning Point Ensemble, Continuum Contemporary Music, Ad Mare Wind Quintet, The Microscore Project, the Vertical Orchestra, Fringe Percussion, the Yarilo Duo, Gamelan Gita Asmara, saxophonist Julia Nolan, and pianist Marguerite Witvoet.  His compositions Ex Libris and Dragons in the Air were part of the successful Vertical Orchestra spatial-music performances at the Vancouver Public Library.  In 2006 he formed his own chamber orchestra, The Colin MacDonald Pocket Orchestra, to present his original works.  Colin's debut CD Circle of Wind containing his chamber compositions for saxophone was released in 2011. www.crypticmusic.ca
