So much has changed since the inception of For the Love of Pits in 2005. At that time, For the Love of Pits was the only organization in Northeast Ohio, among other things, rescuing "pit bull" dogs, fighting against breed-specific legislation and educating the public about the injustices faced by pit bull owners and their dogs. Although "pit bulls" have gained more support in the recent past, there is still so much to be done to help these wonderful dogs. Each year, Pasta for Pits raises critical funds enabling For the Love of Pits, among other things, to:
(a)(i)rescue abused, sick, scared, homeless pit bull dogs who have never experienced the kindness of humans, (ii) teach the dogs to trust and help build their confidence, (iii) provide a safe temporary home where the dogs learn to behave as a family pet in a loving home, (iv) teach the dogs basic obedience & (v) match each dog with a dedicated, loving family able to meet the dog's needs for the rest of the dog's life;
(b) properly screen potential adopters and provide them with the necessary education, including, but not limited to, canine communication and body language, to ensure a successful transition for our dogs into their forever homes;
(c) provide free spay/neuter and low cost vaccinations for owners of pit bulls who cannot afford to provide medical care to their canine companions;
(d) visit local elementary schools and have workshops for school-age children to educate children regarding how to properly care for a dog, responsible ownership, the proper way to meet a new dog, what to do if a loose dog chases them and how to safely interact with dogs;
(e) sponsor education seminars for the public; and
(f) educate the public regarding the gentle nature of the "pit bull," responsible ownership, canine communication and body language and so much more.
