RUNA RUNA draws on the diverse musical backgrounds of its band members and offers a contemporary and refreshing approach to traditional and more recently composed Celtic material. Through their repertoire of both highly energetic and graceful, acoustic melodies, along with their fusion of music from Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and the United States, this vocal and instrumental ensemble gives its arrangements of traditional songs and tunes a fresh sound.
Members of RUNA have played with Solas, Riverdance, Slide, Clannad, Fiddlers' Bid, Moya Brennan, Eileen Ivers, Hazel O'Conner, Full Frontal Folk, Keith & Kristyn Getty, Barcó, and the Guy Mendilow Band.
RUNA consists of vocalist and step-dancer, Shannon Lambert-Ryan of Philadelphia, Dublin-born guitarist, Fionán de Barra, Cheryl Prashker of Canada on percussion, and Maggie Estes of Louisville on the fiddle, and Galway's Dave Curley on mandolin, bodhrán, vocals, and step-dancing. The band often performs with world-renowned, guest musicians, including Isaac Alderson on the uilleann pipes, flutes, and whistles.
Joining RUNA for this performance is MICHAEL STRIBLING Michael Stribling is an award winning Uilleann Piper and Traditional Irish musician. michaelHe studied under Master Irish Musicians including Jerry O'Sullivan, Mickey Dunne, Joannie Madden and Catherine McEvoy. In 2010, Michael won the title of "All Ireland Champion" on the Uilleann Pipes when he competed in Cavan, Ireland. He has toured and performed across the United states, Canada, and Europe. In the summer of 2013, Michael toured with the Award Winning Traditional Irish music group "Fullset" from Ireland. His dedication to the Tradition shines through on his work with the Uilleann Pipes, Low Whistle, Flute and Tin Whistle. He is a founding member of the Irish group "Killavil" which he performs with actively across the USA and abroad.
CHAMOMILE & WHISKEY In just two years, Chamomile and Whiskey has become one of the hottest bands in central Virginia. They have released two albums with the new label County Wide Records, and played hundreds of shows on the east coast. Much of their success can be attributed to their passionate and energetic live performance. Their strong connection with the audience has given them a number of great opportunities, including shows with Railroad Earth, Rusted Root, J Roddy Walston, The Last Bison, and many shared bills with fellow Charlottesville natives the Hackensaw Boys.
Marie Borgman's versatile fiddle playing is a key component to the group's adaptability; while Irish and Old-Time seem her forte, gypsy and classical musings are heard through out her playing. The contrast between Koda Kerl and Ryan Lavin's songwriting is another great blend of sounds. Lavin (a native of Galway, Ireland) brings passionate vocals to his tunes, as well his own brand of banjo playing, elevating the energy with every note. The rhythm pulsates with the thump of hungry musicians, a bottle of whiskey, and a purpose. SUNDAY, MARCH 16 DOORS: 3PM | SHOW: 4PM
