Duwamish Longhouse--5th Anniversary Celebration--Free
Open house, concert & reception.  Celebrate the heritage of the Greater Seattle's First People, Chief Seattle's Duwamish Tribe.  Open house, 10-5, visit exhibit areas and art gallery. Festivities include a reception (12-1pm) and free concert (2-3pm)-- the Duwamish "Epic of the North Wind" by NW Native storyteller Roger Fernandes.
It is the 5th Anniversary of the building of the first Duwamish Longhouse since the last one was burned down in West Seattle in 1894 to push the Duwamish off their land.  In 1851, there were over 90 Duwamish Longhouses.  Opened in 2009, the Longhouse is a traditional cedar post and beam structure designed in the Puget Salish Longhouse style.  It houses a Native Art Gallery, Duwamish History Museum, Gift Shop, Duwamish Tribal Offices, and traditional Longhouse. As in ancient times, Longhouse is the site where tribal business is conducted and cultural & educational events are held.

2pm concert--This Duwamish land has its stories. Share in the Duwamish "EPIC OF THE NOTH WIND."  Journey back to a time when the North Wind held this land under his power, covering it with ice and snow.  Local Native storyteller and Master Salish Artist Roger Fernandes shares this ancient teaching. Children and friends will be invited to join in song and dance.

Roger Fernandes is a Native American artist whose work reflects the culture and beliefs of the Puget Salish tribes of the Pacific Northwest Coast. A member of the Lower Elwha S'Klallam Tribe, he was born and raised in Seattle and studied art at the University of Washington.
