HOT JAZZ AT THE GALLERY With THE GRETA MATASSA QUINTET
Continuing Frederick Holmes And Company Gallery's series of live jazz performances by regional and national artists, HOT JAZZ AT THE GALLERY, we're honored to present GRETA MATASSA and THE GRETA MATASSA QUINTET!
Matassa was scheduled originally for April 2020 but we all know how that went! Greta Matassa is arguably THE most beloved and respected Jazz vocalist in the Northwest, has performed internationally, and has been named "Vocalist Of The Year" seven times by Earshot Jazz! In 2014 Ms. Matassa was named Earshot's "Vocalist Of The Year" again, honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and inducted into The Earshot Jazz Hall of Fame.
Award-winning, Hall of Fame Jazz Vocalist Greta Matassa has a new group these days and is featured in many of the areas best jazz clubs and concert venues. The group consists of guitarist Brian Monroney, bassist Clipper Anderson, Mark Ivester on drums and Alexey Nikolaev on Sax. The new group features all new material and arrangements with a contemporary jazz bent. Although the songs may be new, there are classics such as George Shearing, Bill Evans, Chick Corea and Dave Brubeck. As well as jazz interpretations of Stevie Wonder, Sting, Bonnie Raitt, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny and Brazilian composers as well. As always Gretas concerts also feature tunes from her 11 recordings and many of the classic jazz standards as well.
Her 40 year career has been a whirlwind of exciting opportunities and experiences. Over the last 20 years she has become established as one of the greatest jazz singers of her time. Working with top jazz musicians in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. In 2016 She was featured with bassist John Claytons group in a centennial tribute to Ella Fitzgerald. Praising her performances, Mr. Clayton exclaimed, "One of the best jazz singers we have to boast about these days."
"Matassas performance was a marvel of virtuosity." - LOS ANGELES TIMES "Worldly, gentle, bold, dynamic, Favorites From a Long Walk is a gift for the heart. Greta Matassa is one of Americas finest singers, and stands firmly among the best in todays jazz." - JAZZ REVIEW "Purists might argue there will never be another Ella or Billie. These cats have obviously never heard Greta Matassa!" - THE SEATTLE TIMES
In addition to her performing and recording, she also teaches and has recently begun a mentorship program, introducing a few of her most talented students - jazz vocalists themselves - as the opening act of her performances. On this particular evening, we're proud to present Ms. Nicole Conrad Walters as the "opener" for Ms. Matassa.
Fine wines courtesy of our neighbor, Locus Wines Tasting Room, will be available for purchase the evening of the performance.
HOT JAZZ AT THE GALLERY continues our dedication to music - which began when the gallery was selected as the VIP Venue for the late Paul Allen's UPSTREAM MUSIC FEST. Music and Visual Art, is fundamental to our humanity, soothes the exhausted soul, and elevates our spirit unlike anything else.
