"Humor is mankind's greatest blessing." - Mark Twain
Composers have always utilized humor in their music, from the musical jokes embedded in Haydn's string quartet to the giant sneezes in Kodaly's Hary Janos. New music these days however tends to be serious compositions pondering about questions of life, and too often composers forget that music can (and ought to) bring a smile to our faces. Ad Hoc believes that we should have more levity in our daily lives, so we want to achieve that by presenting a musical experience of highbrow music and irresistible laughter.
In Ad Hoc Cracks The Nutcracker, we infuse humor into Tchaikovsky's festive classic to make it more accessible and appealing to audiences of all age groups. With comedic narration and an intelligent re-working of The Nutcracker by Artistic Director Matt Osika, Ad Hoc aims to reveal an alternate reality of what really happened on Christmas Eve in a light-hearted, satirical fashion.
Re-composed for a chamber orchestra with narration, the music cleverly weaves Tchaikovsky's charming melodies with elements of surprise, parody and even incongruous harmonies to thwart the expectation of the audience. The tongue-in-cheek narration re-imagines the charming tale of Clara and the Nutcracker in a version that our parents would intentionally keep away from us.
