Thinking Based Learning

As we have been exposing on our history homework blog in recent months, the new educational trends focus their attention, of course, on technologies, but they also do so in the search for student autonomy.

With this philosophy, the thinking-based learning methodology was born, which consists of teaching students to build their own learning. Do you want to know how the teachers who apply it do it?

Thinking based learning

The main objective of this educational trend is for students to acquire the necessary skills to assimilate information, reflect on it and apply it.

To achieve this, the methodology requires that teachers encourage active listening, metacognition, data collection through the senses, and communication skills in the classroom. Through these skills, students will be able to hone their independent thinking, which will allow them to function autonomously.

How to put Thinking based learning into practice?

Thinking-based learning requires that students be an active part of learning and for this, there are a series of resources that teachers must use to get students to reflect on the subject and draw their own conclusions.

It is about teaching how to learn and not about teaching a theory that is never really assimilated by the students.

Of the different methods that exist to achieve this, two are worth highlighting:

Thinking routines:

These are discussion routines that highlight the different concepts that the teacher considers appropriate to work on. Reflecting on them and exchanging ideas will allow them to delve into the subject for themselves, which will help to understand and assimilate it. On the other hand, through this educational instrument, communication and assertive skills so necessary for life in society are acquired.

Graphic organizers.

Graphic organizers help students develop their curiosity and the ability to seek answers and think for themselves. Through different visual maps, students will be able to question and understand the reality that surrounds them.

There are different types of graphic organizers, but on the basis, they are all used for the same purpose, that students obtain the answers through their own effort.

Timelines

It allows them to organize events chronologically. Very useful for the subjects of history, art, and literature, in which they must dive between different sources of information to determine what have been the really decisive events to build today's society.

Mental maps

Around a key concept, the student must create a map allowing different ideas to be visualized and structured.

Conceptual map

It allows you to graphically capture ideas, concepts or content. The creation of these diagrams allows students to understand and be able to synthesize the information.

Synoptic table

It is another schematic model that allows the visualization of the theory.

<span class="">Education has evolved, fortunately, not only adapting to technological change but also focusing on contributing to an improvement in human thinking. To achieve this, however, teachers must not only have goodwill, but they must also acquire competencies in the different methodologies.

There are different courses that can be very useful for those teachers who wish to turn their classrooms into the most cutting-edge and put some of the new educational trends into practice. The students will appreciate it and the entrepreneurs of the future will also appreciate it since creating autonomous students will be a guarantee of effective workers. Join the change!
